ECIor the Election commission of India is set up as per article 324 of Indian Constitution to ensure fair elections throughout the country. It is an unavoidable necessity that this body should be unbiased. If not the process of elections and the subsequent government formed become corrupt. During the previous Lok Sabha elections Kerala had repolling in 2 booths due to malpractices being reported. That is a praiseworthy initiative. But has the ECI shown the same amount of dedication in other parts of India as well? Let’s take a closer look

1. PM Kisan Yojana

The model code of conduct strictly vans the implementation of any social security scheme once the election is announced. Yet the many governments in the North and especially UP transferred the first instalment of this yojana,Rs.2000, to the farmers. ECI never objected

2. Freebies

The BJP candidate of Amethi, now MP, distributed freebies to the people of this locality. Distributing freebies is an election offence. For this also we saw no action.

3. Clean chits to Modi and Amit Shah

After the election being announced,ECI had published clear-cutguidelines. These guidelines included not to seek votes in the name army and religion. Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah violated these many times in open. For all those occasions ECI had given then clean chits.

4. Unescorted voting machines

People had recorded evidence of voting machines being taken to the counting stations unescorted and also by the people not authorised to carry them. ECI till date hasn’t uttered a single clarification for the issue

5. Namo TV

All campaigns come to an end one day prior to the polling day. But Nano TV aired programmes seeking votes for BJP violating this mandate. Yet again, no action from ECI.

These much of violations and no single action in the right direction have given it the rightful name of being pro- ruling party. When once asked about pending complaints and untimely actions during an interview, one of the commissioners said “In the world of social media and mobile phones, people get to know things immediately, which we take time to get to know and react on... The volume of work is huge. The world has drastically changed because of social media” Asper the law ECI can take action without the complaint for any breach of election procedure. But it is a sad fate for our democracy that the current ECI chose not to do so. It is even more sad when we think that the same commission had hosted officials like TN Seshan .This is the democracy we live in!!!
