One of the greatest geniuses of the Hyuga clan to grace the screen, Neji was a definite hero in the anime Naruto. While it is true that he is a really awesome character, you wouldn't feel the respect towards him in the beginning of the series. This is probably because of the fact that he is initially a person who is filled with hate towards the main branch of the Hyuga clan. This has something to do with the fact that there is a discrimination between the people born in the main family and the branch family. While the main family are driven towards the protection of the visual prowess called the Byakugan, the branch family are supposed to protect the main family.

Neji's father, Hizashi was the younger twin of the leader of the main family, Hiyashi. just because of the fact that he is younger, Hizashi was classified as the branch family and the curse mark was put on him. This curse mark enables the people of the main family to punish the branch family if they try to harm the members of the main family. This is something that has been a tradition of the Hyuga clan. Nevertheless, the bond between Hiyashi and Hizashi was strong.

Things would have been alright if there weren’t any mishaps. Once, when there was a treaty to be signed between the Hidden Leaf and another village, the people from the second village sent a spy to the Hyuga family's house to steal info. But it so happened that Hiyashi woke up during that time and on encounter, killed the spy. The people from the other village started claiming that Hiyashi needs to be punished with death for killing a member of their village. A meeting was held between the Hokage and the Hyuga family. Hizashi was ready to lay down his life for his brother and was assassinated. This incident was something that changed little Neji's perspective towards the main family because he did not know that switching the identity of the person to be killed was the idea of his own father.

He began to despise the main family for killing his father. While he was growing up, he was assigned to be the sparring partner to Hinata, the elder daughter of Hiyashi, who was a year younger than Neji. On one particular day, he had an outburst of anger and began hitting Hinata too hard and Hiyashi had to intervene, using the curse mark which was put on Neji. Years later, when Neji was battling against Naruto, he claims to have undergone so much difficulty in his life to which Naruto makes him realise that he's not the only one who has had difficulties, and that he's not the only one cursed with a destiny he cannot overwrite. On multiple instances after that battle, we see Neji grow to become the most powerful Hyuga
