There has been an avalanche of responses both for and against the move by the government of Delhi. There are various aspects to analyse the nature of the move. First things first, it is said that it will facilitate transport facilities for women commuters which has seen an all time low in the past years. Well, as far as the metro trains are concerned, it may so happen that the lesser privileged women get an opportunity to commute freely in the metros. But for the buses that travel in the city, it is equivalent to little or no use at all since free transport does not mean safer travel. Also, the fact that the economic expenses shall be reimbursed by the government is as ambiguous as it may sound and there might be financial issues and the reimbursement is not backed by any substantial pretext.

The government said men enjoy alternatives that don't compromise their safety, such as two-wheelers and ride-sharing apps. On that note, the scheme shall be a welcome change. Larger number of women commuting means larger number of women in the public. This move holds the possibility of transforming Delhi as a city, making it friendlier, approachable, and more accessible for women. This was the more or less brighter side of the move. But the whole timing of the introduction of the scheme can also hold an ulterior motive to win votes for the upcoming elections. Politicians are seldom truthful and regardless of the positive side of the move, we deep down know that the intent may not be malignant but it is not selfless, nonetheless. I see this scheme as a step towards making the city safer for women and also a step towards remaining in power. There are both the sides to the coin and we cannot negate any of it.

making metros free won't serve the purpose of women's safety. I have also written an article on a similar issue, do check it out!
