From the first fast radio bursts in 2007 to the interstellar objectOumuamua, which passed through our solar system in 2017-2018. Every time an unexplained phenomena in deep space is discovered, people wonder: Is this finally a sign from aliens?!

While the lifelong debate persists whether aliens exist or not? There have been speculations regarding the presence of several habitable planets like Earth where life could evolve like it did here. Sometimes, that life would become intelligent. We’d expect such a universe to have lots of flourishing civilizations — as well as lots of extinct ones. Because isn’t it odd that we are the only civilization that exists in this astonishingly large universe?

But if there are other life forms in other planets, then how do they look ? what do they survive on? Are they smarter or more primitive than us? Like their existence, there have been various hypotheses that scientists have formed.

One such scientist, Dan Hooper, a senior scientist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois, thinks that the extra-terrestrial intelligent species would survive by collecting, storing and harnessing the energy of stars by using Dyson Spheres, a theoretical structure popularized by sci-fi writer Olaf Stapledon in his novel "Star Maker”.

There are other theories that Aliens are not completely dependent on H2O for their survival but on other factors too, like hydrogen on their planets. There is a high possibility of having hydrogen sources similar to petroleum, natural gas, coal etc. on other planets. Not only Hydrogen, but scientists also believed that Nitrogen can also be a basic factor for survival of aliens. Nitrogen is found in form of gas on earth but under extreme cold weather condition, nitrogen transforms into liquid which can be suitable for nurturing life.

Human body comprises of 80% water, and minerals and proteins making up the rest. But there can be civilizations that have hydrogen as an essential nutrition in their body and that can be the reason for their different thinking and body structure than humans.

While we still don’t know where we rank in terms of intelligence, according to Kardashev scale, a method to measure the technological and mental advancement of a civilization based on the amount of energy they use. There are three types of civilization in the universe.

Type 1: Technological level of a civilization that can harness all the energy that falls on a planet from its parent star (The sun – in case of Earth)

Type 2: A civilization capable of harnessing the energy radiated by its own star—for example, the stage of successful construction of aDyson sphere.

Type 3: A civilization in possession of energy on the scale of its owngalaxy.

It’s said that Human civilization is moving toward the Type 1 civilization as humans are collecting, storing and harnessing Solar energy for their own use. A lot of civilizations havedestroyed themselves, in the process of achieving Type 1 civilization. But humans were somehow able to pull themselves at this stage and are continuously growing. With advancement in technology and thinking, a completely new arena for improvement has been discovered.

“ We should do astronomy because its beautiful and its fun. We should do it because people want to know. We want to know our place in the universe and how things happen.”
