The need to look for greener pastures is inherent within us. We all have our reasons for seeking employment outside our locality, state, country or continent. The fundamental reason is financial stability. Other reasons include: the desire to change environment, employment opportunities, e.t.c. Some have been successful in their job search and were offered employment in various LEGITIMATE organisations.
While it is commendable for someone to leave everything familiar to a country unknown in search of jobs, it can also lead to fatal consequences if the jobs are not legitimate or are downright illegal. This is often happens when job seekers fail to verify how genuine the job offer is. There have been so many heartbreaking real life stories that have been relayed on the news; of healthy young men in search of jobs outside their home countries being misled and forced to sell parts of their organs or become illegal drugs carrying vessels, of vulnerable young women lured to other countries and being forced into prostitution or forced into manual and domestic labour with no means of going back to their countries most often times losing their lives.
I could recall years ago when I was surfing through the internet for job opportunities for my younger sister. The job seemed too good to be true and I was excited at the prospect of a good paying job for her. But imagine my surprise when I scrolled down the supposed company’s website to look for contact details and discovered that while the company is located in one country, the contact number provided started with the country code of another country in another continent! This was a company with no subsidiary. To fuel my suspicion further, the terms and conditions stated that employees on arrival at the company would have their passports taken for a specified period of time for inspection purposes. I knew there and then that even if the job were genuine, no way would my sister apply for a job with questionable motives. Most job seekers are in dire need of job and desperate enough due to their understandable situations that they wouldn’t have thought twice about applying to the questionable company stated above.
All in all, I am not saying moving outside your locality, state, country or continent is a bad thing. I am just emphasizing that we need to be security conscious and careful before we apply for any job even within your locality. Look up the company you are applying to on Google, check their address out on the internet, make sure to read their terms and conditions and lastly, check out their contact information.
