So this one day when I was randomly scrolling through Instagram posts and pages, I came across a feminist post that said “A woman who believes in herself and appreciates her beauty is a true feminist”. Eager to read what people feel about it I went down to the comment section and I was shocked to see women spreading gibberish like feminists don’t care about beauty, or else ugly women won’t be feminists.
Beauty and Feminism can coexist without a problem, even if some people say otherwise. Only because someone is Feminist doesn't mean that she can't care about Beauty. Believing in yourself, appreciate your presence, and valuing your beauty are all a part of feminism.
Feminism means equality between the genders. Everyone has their taste of Beauty. Only because someone likes Make-up doesn't mean they are less Feminist. Only if someone likes to get ready and look their best every day doesn’t make them less radical.
Caring about their appearance or want to look nice doesn't mean not being Feminist. Feminism's not about shutting down society standards but it's about woman's freedom to choose for themselves whatever they want to do, to say, to wear, etc.
Most important it's that men, society and everyone else can not choose what our Standard of Beauty we have. We shouldn't see Beauty Stereotype as Beauty Standard, because it doesn't work like that.
Some of the Beauty Stereotype we need to break and the proof that is not true:
1. Long hair equals feminine, short hair equals boyish.
2. Fat is not beautiful.
3. No girl looks so good without makeup or plastic surgery.
4. Freckles and moles need to be concealed
5. Grey hair is a big no-no
6. A woman over 40 is too old to sport red lipstick.
Why do we still make judgements, and then complain?
Be that woman who roots for other women, tells a stranger that her hair looks amazing, her style is on point, and encourages other women to believe in themselves and their dreams.
Be patient with the process of learning to love your heart again. Your skin is beautiful the way it is. The colour, the texture, the spots, the hair will not define you. Your attitude, your character, your strengths and weaknesses will. Learn and grow.
