Internet of Things well known as IoT is the burning topic today. IoT is the network of devices, vehicles, and home appliances that contains electronics, software, actuator and connectivitywhich allows these things to connect, interact and exchange data.

“The Internet of Things is not a concept; it is a network, the true technology-enabled Network of all networks.” – Edewede Oriwoh

HISTORY:

The definition and proper discursion of Internet of things has came from the combination of various emerging as well as core technology topics such as:

·Embedded systems
·Real time analysis
·Machine learning
·Wireless sensor technology
·Control system
·Automations etc.
The term ‘Internet of Things’ was likely coined by Kelvin Ashton in 1999.

Applications of IoT:

Ø Smart Home: IoT devices are the core objectives for the home automation. And we all know that the necessity and demand of the home automation in today’s world is rising up. Home automations include lighting, heating, air conditioning and even the security systems. If we plan for the long term benefits then we can definitely assure the energy saving by turning off the misused electricity used in various home appliances on the platform of the IoT.

Even home automation is now-a-days used in developing special gadgets to take care of elders and disabled people.

Ø Medical Issues: Internet of Medical Things is a part of Internet of Things in the field of medical science. Starting from data collection, analysis of research, monitoring of patients under digitalized health care system and providing proper healthcare resources & services, belong under the group of medical care by IoT.

Ø Industrial uses: IoT devices can be used to monitor and control the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems used in various types of buildings (e.g., public and private, industrial, institutions, or residential). Even in industries where a huge scale of production is done under the use of large scale machineries, use IoT devices to control such devices automatically.

§Manufacturing: The IoT can realize the seamless integration of various manufacturing devices equipped with sensing, identification, processing, communication, actuation, and networking capabilities. Based on such a highly integrated smart cyber-physical space, it opens the door to create whole new business and market opportunities for manufacturing.

§The IoT intelligent systems enable rapid manufacturing of new products, dynamic response to product demands, and real-time optimization of manufacturing production andsupply chain network, by networking machinery, sensors and control systems together.

Ø Agriculture Use: IoT is hugely used in agriculture technology. There are numerous IoT applications in farmingsuch as collecting data on temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed, pest infestation, and soil content. This data can be used to automate farming techniques, take informed decisions to improve quality and quantity, minimize risk and waste, and reduce effort required to manage crops. For example, farmers can now monitor soil temperature and moisture from afar, and even apply IoT-acquired data to precision fertilization programs.

Ø Infrastructure Applications: Monitoring and controlling operations of sustainable urban and rural infrastructures like bridges, railway tracks and on- and offshore wind-farms is a key application of the IoT.The IoT infrastructure can be used for monitoring any events or changes in structural conditions that can compromise safety and increase risk. IoT can benefit the construction industry by cost saving, time reduction, better quality workday, paperless workflow and increase in productivity. It can help in taking faster decisions and save money with Real-Time Data Analytics. It can also be used for scheduling repair and maintenance activities in an efficient manner, by coordinating tasks between different service providers and users of these facilities. IoT devices can also be used to control critical infrastructure like bridges to provide access to ships.

Enabling Technologies for IoT:

There are various technologies used to ensure IoT as the main use in our daily life, some of the devices are:

Ø Short Range:
1.Bluetooth Mesh Network: Specification providing a mesh networking variant to Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) with increased number of nodes and standardized application layer (Models).

2.QR Codes & Bar Codes: Machine-readable optical tags that store information about the item to which they are attached.

3.Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID): Technology using electromagnetic fields to read data stored in tags embedded in other items.

Ø Long Range:
1.LTE-Advanced: High-speed communication specification for mobile networks. Provides enhancements to the LTEstandard with extended coverage, higher throughput, and lower latency.

2.Low-Power Wide-Area Networking(LPWAN): Wireless networks designed to allow long-range communication at a low data rate, reducing power and cost for transmission. Available LPWAN technologies and protocols: LoRaWan, Sigfox, NB-IoT, Weightless.

Important Issues on IoT:

One of the key drivers of the IoT is data. The success of the idea of connecting devices to make them more efficient is dependent upon access to and storage & processing of data. For this purpose, companies working on IoT collect data from multiple sources and store it in their cloud network for further processing. This leaves the door wide open for privacy and security dangers and single point vulnerability of multiple systems.

Last but not the least, we can experience a smatter and developed world in the upcoming future with the help of IoT.
