Grand Theft Auto: San Andreasis anactionvideo gamepublished by Rockstar Games in 2005 for Windows. It is the third game in the GTA series.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreasis played from athird-person perspectivein anopen worldenvironment, allowing the player to interact with the game world at their leisure. The game is set within the fictionalU.S. stateof San Andreas. The state of San Andreas consists of three metropolitan cities:Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas.

It consists of role-playing and stealth elements. On foot, the player's character(Carl Johnson) is capable of walking, sprinting, running, climbing, swimming, and jumping as well as using weapons and various forms of hand-to-hand combat. The player can drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, semis, buses, boats, jetpacks, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, tanks, trains, bikes and motorcycles. The player may also import vehicles in addition to stealing them.

The open-world environment allows the player to explore and choose how they wish to play the game. Although missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain content and cities, they are not required to be completed one after the other as the player can complete them at their own leisure. When not taking on a mission, the player can freely-roam and look around the cities of San Andreas, eat in restaurants, get new clothes, get a haircut, paint cars, or cause havoc by causing destruction and attacking people. Creating havoc can attract potentially fatal attention from the authorities. The more chaos caused, the stronger the response: police will handle "minor" infractions (pointinggunsat people, attacking pedestrians, manslaughter, stealing vehicles, etc.), whereasthe FBI, SWATteams, and themilitaryrespond to higher wanted levels.

Certain side missions are also included, such as putting out fires, dropping off taxi cab passengers, fighting crime as avigilante and driving injured people to the hospital.

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas... a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers. Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."
