It was 1975 when the first ever world cup was held in England. Back then the ODI was played for 60 overs rather than 50 overs. Despite the home advantage to England it was West Indies which became victorious in the end. Indian team was nowhere in the competition.
1979 world cup had the same story only the difference was the losing team. But it was the time when other teams started to make a difference.
Back to back victory and West Indies were at the top in the 1983 world cup final. In fact everyone was confident of another Caribbean show except to be toppled by team India. Led by Kapil Dev, India was the first Asian team to win a world cup and that too when they started as dark horses.
Time was changed and so was the venue. 1987 world cup witnessed the Asian pitches and crowds but it was a disappointment for them as no Asian team could even make it to the Finals and it went to the Australia for the first time.
The Reign of West Indies was over and it was Asian team who broke the shackles, be it 1992 world cup by Pakistan or 1996 world cup by the Sri Lanka after the controversial victory against India in the semis.
It is said that one player can make a difference but what if the whole team is blessed with such players. This was the case with Australia as they ruled the world cricket for next 10 years by three consecutive world cup victory i.e. 1999, 2003 and 2007.
It was already 9 world cup but no team has ever won it at their home but this has to be changed and it was. India under the captaincy M.S. Dhoni emerged victorious at their home for the first time. “India won the world cup and after 28 years the party started in the dressing room.”
A record is made to be broken. It was India who did it in 2011 and now it was Australia in 2015, back at their winning track and this time at their home.
5 out of 11, this is the record which Australia holds presently and A record is made to be broken.
Wait for the 2019 world cup is almost over now. England as the hosts will start the tournament as the favourites but India is not too far. It's going to be the most competetive world cup ever held.
