Jallikattu is the pride of Tamilnadu. It is also known by the names as Eruthazhuvuthal and Manjuvirattu. Our national emblem of India is represented by a bull at the right corner of the ashoka chakra represents hard work and steadfastness. The national emblem is thus the symbol of contemporary India’s reaffirmation of its ancient commitment to world peace. Jallikattu is a bull-taming event that practiced as a part of Pongal celebration in Tamilnadu. It is celebrated on the third and fourth day on behalf of Mattu Pongal. It is renowned as an ancient sport that has been practiced 2500 years ago. Bos indicus bulls such as Kangayam, Umblachery, Bargur, Alambadi, and Pulikulum are the only genus used for Jallikattu.

Law against Jallikattu

In 2014, the sport was outlawed by the supreme court under cruelty at the Act of 2009 by the animal rights activists. The ban was issued in direct contravention with the supreme court’s order and was challenged by the organization such as people for the ethical treatment of animals (PETA). The stay order was issued by the court against Jallikattu.

People arose on protest

The Judgement of the supreme court was not acceptable by the tamilians. This becomes the main cause of the rise of protest. Tamilians consider it as a pride since it has been carried from the ancient tradition on for years. Around thousands of participants attempting to tame the bulls by latching to their horns and humps. Evidence of this sport is found in the dravidian culture. Jallikattu inspired many people to hold on their bulls and farmers provide extra care towards them. If still the ban continues then there will be no incentive to hold on to the bulls. The native breed called “Alambadi “has been declared officially as extinct.

The protesters say that their fight is for their culture and tamil pride and reject the allegation that Jallikattu is cruel to the bulls. They also demanded that the animal rights organization PETA has to be banished from the state and lobbied against Jallikattu. Many were gathered at the Marina, it was a huge revolution in the history of Tamilnadu.

This protest has been uplifted and spread beyond India with the tamil diaspora in Sri Lanka, Britain, and Australia. Thousands of tamils living in other countries supported the Jallikattu protest from their location. Several national leaders also supported the Jallikattu agitation. Through the Jallikattu we have conveyed the solidarity and dignity of the nation to other countries

This is our pride, our culture, our tradition, it’s our right to preserve it, never let it’s values down”
