Ayushman Bharat Yojna /Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (PMJAY) / National Health Protection Scheme/ Modicare is a centrally promoted scheme launched in 2018, under the Ayushman Bharat Mission of MoHFW for a new India-2022. This scheme basically focuses at making arbitrations in primary, secondary and tertiary care systems which cover both preventive and pro-motive health to address it holistically. It was declared on 25thSeptember, 2018. The day is memorized as the birth anniversary of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

Yojna is chaired by Indu Bhushan (CEO) and Dr. Dinesh Arora (deputy CEO of this yojna).
This scheme is formed by intermingling multiple schemes including Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna, Senior Citizen Health Insurance Scheme (SCHIS) etc.

This scheme consists of two major aspects:-

  1. National Health Protection Scheme

  2. Wellness Centers

1) National Health Protection Scheme
·Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Scheme, which would cover more than 10 crore poor and vulnerable families (approx. 50 crore beneficiaries) providing coverage up to 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization.

·The benefits of the scheme are quite portable across the country and the receivers covered under the scheme will be allowed to take cashless advantages from any public or private impaneled hospitals across the nation.

·It will be a prerogative based scheme with claim decided on the basis of deprivation criteria in the SECC database. It will be targeting about 10.74 crore poverty stricken families and segregated occupational category or urban workers’ families as per the latest Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data covering both rural and urban.

·One of its core principles is to co-operate with federalism and flexibility to states.
·Capping almost all secondary and many tertiary hospitalizations. (Excluding a negative list).
·To provide people policy directions and fostering coordination between centre and states, it has set up a council named Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission Council (AB-NHPMC).

It is chaired by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister. States would need establish a State Health Agency (SHA) to implement the scheme.

2.)Wellness Centers
The amount of rupees 1200 crore has been allocated for 1.5 lakh health and wellness centers. Under the funding, 1.5 lakh centers will be set up to provide comprehensive health care, including for non-communicable diseases and maternal and child health services apart from free essential drugs and diagnostic services. The government has already planned to upgrade existing Public Health Centers to Wellness Centers. The lists of services to be provided at these centers include:

·Pregnancy care and maternal health services
·Infant and neonatal health services
·Child health
·Chronic communicable diseases
·Non-communicable diseases
·Management of mental illness
·Dental care
·Geriatric care emergency medicine
Progress:
26 states and union territories accepted the scheme except three i.e. Delhi, Odisha and Telangana. Approximately more than a lakh people have taken benefit out of this scheme till October 2018.

There are many pros and cons to every new step but this is the world’s largest medical insurance scheme as it covers such a large number of population. And I believe every Indian should support the running government for all these initiatives.
