Jai Rajputana!

One of the most incredible things about India is her abundance of majestic, ancient castles that redefine the words ‘beauty’ and ‘grandeur’. People from all over the world find it a very worthy indulgence to visit the various forts and palaces owned by the majestic Rajput families of India. It is not only because of the architecture that the castles in India deserve the fame they’re bestowed upon with; it is because of the histories of valiance, bravery and sacrifice that the walls of these castles enclose.

Udaipur Palace

The construction of the City Palace of Udaipur, structured with marble and masonry, was started in the year 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput family, which was later continued for almost a period of four hundred years, with contributions from several rulers of the Mewar dynasty. Constructed as an example of fusion of two architectures, the Rajasthani and Mughal architectures, the Palace is the largest of its kind in the whole of Rajasthan.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur is now home to the Maharaja’s grandson, the present owner Gaj Singh. A part of the palace is a museum, and another part is managed by the Tata Group of Taj Hotels. Built in a blend of eastern and western architectural styles, the Umaid Bhawan Palace has magnificent interiors. The palace actually has a throne chamber, a private meeting hall, several other halls for public meetings, a vaulted banquet hall, a ballroom, a library, an indoor swimming pool and spa, two marble squash courts and long passageways.

Jai Vilas Palace

Constructed in the 19thCentury by Maharajadhiraj Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior, the Jai Vilas Palace is still home to the descendants of the Scindia Rajvansh, the former royal Maratha dynasty. Its present owner is Jyotiraditya Scindia, a renowned Indian Politician and a member of the Indian National Congress. A fine example of European architecture, the Jai Vilas Palace is a combination of the Tuscan, Doric-Italian and Corinthian architectures.

Mysore Palace

The Mysore Palace of Karnataka is one of the most beautifully built castles in South India. Locally, the palace is also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, and is blessed with the beauty of two darbars, mesmerizing courtyards and elegant gardens in its surroundings. The castle looks like a spellbinding Indian bride at night when it is decorated with lights.

More than just a land of diverse cultures, India is the land of royal splendor and sumptuousness. The tales of the long gone Kings and Queens of India are kept alive in the majestic castles they left behind for generations to behold.
