Great goal :)
Here are some practial tips:
Practice singing every day
Learn vocal warm-ups, singing techniques and look into to how to take care of your voice.
Find a tutor/mentor/coach
It's always handy to have a coach. Think of athletes; they all have coaches.
And most importantly, you need to have someone at your side that you can trust in your musical journey.

Find a person who is dedicated about singing. Here is an example of a great singing
Get in touch with nature
Walk in the woods, find a beach, lake, river, desert or mountain and spend at least a few hours there to get in touch with nature to find your voice.

Write a song
Learn to sing your favorite song
Learn to play a guitar and/or piano
This way you can have music without relying on others.
Join a choir
This is a great way to open up your vocal cords and building up your confidence to perform.
Learn to music theory
(Reading/writing music)
Music theory is not essential but it is a great 'tool' to be able to 'communicate music' to other people or computer systems (yes computers). If you know how to write music, you can collaborate with musicians, bands, producers, composers, film makers and other creatives. With computer software, you write and create music works for film/theatre/plays. Learn the basics on pen and paper first :)

(Choirs should hand out sheet-music , so that's "two birds with one stone")
Look into music schools
Most music education programs/educators want to help you, do your research and don't settle to any school/educator. If you don't like a particular educator/school/person then move on, continue your researching, ask around and engage with the educator(s) thatyoureally like.

Aim towards to sing at a (small local) open mic night
This is to build your confidence to perform live, and a great learning tool. Especially interacting with an audience (if there any, it doesn't matter if it's empty or half full). Just go out there on your own or with a friend and do it :)

And you never know who is in that venue! There could be a producer, music publisher, label owner, a musician, a composer, that really like how you sing and want to collaborate with you,

Tip: Please please please don't be late, be early/on time, always talk to the organiser. Always, always talk to the sound engineer, he/she can make you sound good or horrible and if they like you they can get you in touch with other people. i.e. producers/promoters/organiser/label owners. Work with them.

Avoid "pay to play gigs!"

Learn to be ok with a 'crappy voice' days
The voice can be unreliable, or sometimes you just hate the sound of your voice. Don't worry if you are at this point, treat this "bad voice day", as a "bad hair day". Even if you planned/booked that studio session, have session musicians over or performing a gig, be honest with yourself, do apoligize to your audience and/or the people you work with. They will understand it, so make most of it and enjoy the occasion/event.

Tomorrow is another day. Everyone has and deserves a 2nd chance in life, you don't have "one shot" at it.

Go to gigs
Watch other bands/singers, find out the people who organises the events. If you like the music that's played there, find out when it's avaiable to get a slot to perform.Yes, you can call it 'networking' but most of all enjoy the music :)

Don't jump on every opportunity
Do your research and keep a sharp ear/eye/mind and stay clear of people who want to exploit you!
The music worldcanbe harsh
Learn from other singers to thriveandsurvive in the (music) world. So study and read everything you can about the music world.

Learn from both, who made it and from those who haven't made it!

Always keep on movin' and never give up!

Build up your music knowledge and strengthen your vocal cords.
Ok just a couple more...
but ... now I'm gonna sound like a mum/dad ...
Eat healthy!
I really don't have to explain this one, you can find plenty of info about health and nutrition.
But I will leave this with you:
'An apple a day keeps the doctor away'really means something.
Do excercise!
Singing is a physical thing, and can be really tough on the body, especially when you sing very emotional songs. Working out, excersice and stretching will help out you elivate muscular stress and tension, and strengthens your body.

Plus, if you learn a self-defence sport you probably won't need a body guard when you get famous ;) (or it will be great viral marketing trick, hey you know where you got this from!)

Anyways... that's it from this side of the pond.
Hope this is helpful and hope to hear you sing some day!
Keep us posted and see you on the otherside!
E.T.

ps.Did I mention to always study?
