One silver, one bronze and no gold, this was the total medal tally of India in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. And the most detachable and crucible fact is that both of the medals were earned by women.

Of all the 117 people in the whole athletes that participated on Rio 2016, 63 men and 54 women, across 15 sports at the Games. The 2 women who scored a medal under India’s name were P. V. Sindhu in Badminton and Sakshi Malik in Gymnastics. As an overview, India has won 9 Gold, 7 silvers and 12 bronze medals in the history of Olympics starting from 1900 Paris Olympics, missing out 1904,1908,1912 Olympics and then till Rio. Out of most of these games, 11 medals are earned in Field Hockey.

But this is history. This time the players as well as the coaches in the respective games are supervising their true game and enhancing it to its most potential. In an interview, our honorable sports minister, and himself being a former shooting champion, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, said that “Government is leaving no stone unturned in the next Olympics. It is their moral duty and a chief aim to train 200 elite athletes for 2020 and beyond under its Target Olympic Podium Scheme programme. The main focus is not only on their training but also rehab if any athlete is injured.”

This time the selection and the funding process is under a whole lot supervised condition. The team of the people is the same which won the double-trap silver at the 2004 Athens Games. The main difference that can be observed is that this time the games are going to be a lot more on the younger side. This is due to the fact that this generation is the one filled with the most anguish and hunger for discipline and hard work. That is why it is an alarming instant for the Indian Federations for waking up and that too at the right moment when there is only one and a half years left in the game.
