Last week, TikTok, the popular app for uploading short videos, was issued a temporary ban in India after the judiciary found out that it was hosting content relating to child pornography. Under the ban, the app was no more available for download from the official app stores on both Android and iOS devices. Some people were happy and some were not happy with this decision. However, after the last court hearing, the interim ban was removed. However, despite the removal of the ban, the app still can't be downloaded from the official app stores.

As of April 26, TikTok is still not available for download via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Even if you try to install it via Google Chrome from a computer, the app listing page shows an error. A report by Gadgets 360 suggests that Madras High Court has still not sent the directive officially to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This is the reason the government hasn't been able to ask Google and Apple to make the apps available officially on their app stores.

While the reason for the delay is still unknown, those who are interested in downloading the app will still have to rely on third-party websites for downloading it on Android phones. Do note that the case is still ongoing and it could be a while before the court sends the directive to the government to remove the ban on the app.

On April 24, the Madras High Court removed the interim ban after stating that it was only interested in preventing exposure of children to cybercrime. Additionally, the court also pointed out that India doesn't have legislation like the US COPPA to protect children in cyberspace.

Tik-Tok in its defence suggested that the company has been employing technology to flag objectionable content since July of 2018. The company makes sure that users adhere to community guidelines and stay within the regulations while uploading content to the platform. The company even argued that only 0.0006 per cent of its content is pornographic in nature and it is working to get it removed from the platform.
