Some people set on the journey across the world with the purpose to find their true self. While it may seem extreme to actually move to a new place, it actually shows the importance of self-discovery.

The journey of self-discovery and self-recovery is different for individuals. Some people may need to travel to unfamiliar places while others may just need an ample amount of time spent in solitude.

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery is not an easy path but it is much a needed experience. Growing up we get encouraged to be like other people while our nature, attributes and personality gets buried under what everyone around us “wants” us to be. So why should you find yourself?

1. You need yourself

Commitment toward self-discovery may come after the feeling of separation from ourselves. Sometimes you may feel like a stranger in your own body or feeling of not recognizing the person you see in the mirror. This is a cry that you simply need to your love, affection and compassion.

We spent a lot of time taking care of others and putting everyone’s needs above our own and this leads to self-neglect. Growing up with a lack of proper knowledge of self-care often results in adults who are co-dependent or overcompensate. This is a behaviour of lack of self-sufficiency and it breeds other problems.

2. Building a stronger version of yourself

Whether it is starting a new life of rebuilding your life, finding yourself is about building a new stronger version of yourself. Daily self-development and self-improvement built sound self-esteem and confidence. Self-esteem and confidence are important traits necessary in our modern societies.

Building a stronger version of yourself is about finding the traits that make you unique. It is also learning about your strengths and weaknesses moreover embracing yourself with all your flaws and shortcomings.

3. Find your purpose and talent

Learning about yourself and walking the path to find yourself lead towards finding your purpose and talents. Some people know what they are meant to do with their lives at an early age while some may have to go on a “fishing expedition” until they discover their purpose and talents.

Finding your purpose and talents brings happiness, fulfilment and content in life. It is about sharing who are with yourself and with everyone around you. The journey of self-discovery benefits everyone in a positive way. When you begin to express the real you, it gives other people the courage to be authentically themselves.

4. To be self-reliant

It is nice to have support and love from others but everybody has their own lives to live. People cannot always be by your side motivating you or giving you everything you need when you need it. When you strive to find yourself you strive to be an independent human being who takes responsibility in all areas of their own life.Sure you still need love and support but, you fill your own cup with “everything” that you need instead of expecting other people to do so.

The importance of self-reliance is expecting less from others and whole more from yourself. Eric Thomas said, “We want people to make guarantees to us but we are not willing to make guarantees to ourselves.” When we rely on ourselves we take actions towards making the right choices instead of hoping things will magically fall into place.
