Maintaining a good relationship is not any piece of cake. No matter what the relationship is, professional or personal, you have to make a conscious effort. Being ignorant may lead to petty issues elevating into major disturbances. Having said that, a successful relationship is mutual effort and not a one-man job.

My ‘mantra’ to keep a relationship rock-solid is to be honest at all times. It may sound simple but is very difficult to actually implement. The best way to avoid misunderstandings is to be transparent. Tell the truth no matter how nasty it is. Never give fake assurances or hopes when you have no intention of fulfilling them. You may look bad and egoistic at the time but soon they will realize that you are trustworthy and true to your word. People listen to the opinions only of the ones they care about. So next time no one will hesitate to come to you for a review because they know how honest a person you are. Besides, you won’t have to remember what all lies you have said, reducing the stress to half.

Many relationships end when one person doesn’t acknowledge the other. Self-obsession has never benefitted anyone ever and that applies here also. Being grateful and humble towards other people makes them to like you sub-consciously. Everyone loves it when their efforts are appreciated. Many a times, most problems are solved just by identifying that they exist.

Another main factor that affects relationship is communication. Proper communication is very important between two people to avoid self-assumptions and over thinking. These may lead to unnecessary fights and arguments, poisoning the relationship. Talk it out when you feel something is wrong rather than waiting for the other person to speak up. The quicker you discuss the issue, the faster it is solved.

Every relationship is unique. It depends on the people who are involved and how they deal with it. Trust plays a very important role in building a good foundation of a relationship. You can never expect a relationship to work out without trusting your partner. Be patient and compassionate in the beginning as good things take time to happen. Once it does, you will be happy to have waited, for your relationship will be stronger than ever and you won’t feel stressed out or exhausted. No matter how many people you consult, it is you, and only you that has to make an effort in order to maintain the relationship. So, put aside that ego and start afresh. All the best!
