What Is Wireless Electricity?

The term “Wireless Electricity” leaves us in wonder, is it really possible to pull electricity from the air?

Though it seems distant, it is possible in the near future. It has gradual improvements in their growth. The transmission of electricity from the power source to load without any cables is called Wireless electricity. We might have come across Wireless power transfer, Wireless power transmission, Wireless energy transmission, electromagnetic power transmission, these terms refer to the same technology, “Wireless Electricity”. Let’s have a look of that amazing technology.

Techiques And Principles Of Wireless Electricity

Wireless electricity had its root in the past. Nikola Tesla introduced the power transmission from the transmitter to a receiver without any wires in the late 19th century. Basically, the air is not a conductor of electricity. But when air is exposed to the application of high voltage(in the case of lightning), molecules of air get ionized and started to conduct electricity. The receiver should be in the range of transmitter to get the transmitted power is vitally important to be noted.

When the electric field is induced in other material because of the magnetic field of the electrically charged particle is called Electromagnetic power transmission.

Other techniques related to the WiTricity are:

  • Electricity.

  • Magnetism.

  • Electromagnetism.

  • Magnetic Induction.

  • Power coupling.

  • Resonant Magnetic Coupling.

  • Magnetic field repeater.

Types

Majorly there are three types of WiTricity based on the range:

  • Short-range

For short-range transmission, the electricity is transmitted via the inductive coupling method.

  • Medium Range

For Medium range transmission, the transmission is done by resonant magnetic coupling method.

  • Long range

For long range transmission, the transmission is done by electromagnetic wave power transfer method.

Pros And Cons Of Wireless Electricity

  • The long-range transmission of electricity is achieved by this WiTricity technology even though, they waste energy so much.

  • The wireless power transmission is possible for only a few meters, but they are more reliable, efficient and environment-friendly.

  • Wireless power Transmission is useful in cases where wires are hazardous and impossible.

  • Wireless transmission is not harmful, as radiation is via air(if nonradiative power is transferred), but wireless power transmission is economically beneficial.

Applications

WiTricity is widely useful in many applications domestically as well as industrially.

  • Domestic applications:

Wireless power transmission is transferred within the terrestrial distance. Light, fan, digital picture frames, refrigerator, air conditioners, laptops, mobile etc.,

  • Industrial Applications:

  1. Mobile robots.

  2. Direct wireless power and communication interconnections in harsh environments like drilling, mining, underwater, etc.

  3. Cordless tools.

  4. Direct wireless power transmission interconnections across the joints of robots.

Future Of Wireless Electricity

Wireless power transmission is still in progress to overcome the long-distance barrier. The companies like Qualcomm are working in these techniques to overcome the distance barrier for effective transmission.

Thus, the transmission of power without cables makes the devices to get charged on its own. The transmission of electrical energy is still an attractive technology and developing one. Though it faces some issues, the research is going on to transmit the electrical energy from the source to the electrical load efficiently without the path loss over the long-distance.
