During the ’90s Nirvana and Oasis were the two biggest bands and for totally different reasons. Nirvana had begun the Grunge Revolution in the United States and changed the lives of angry and frustrated youth, meanwhile Oasis had unleashed the beauty and the beast of Britpop to the world. While Nirvana had the backing of the young audience, there was nothing that could unite people of all ages, classes, and genders. Oasis changed it all. At least in the ’90s. After the success of “Supersonic”, it was clear to every one that this band will either gratify us or annoy the hell out of us. They did became annoying as the time passed, their creativity went to drain and their success faded away. But there was a time when Oasis was untouchable. Their debut album ‘Definitely Maybe' and the follow up '( What’s the Story) Morning Glory?' is still considered to be one of the greatest albums ever and we can only imagine how frustrating and maddening it would have been for them to top those classics( which they couldn’t). They eventually gave up after nearly tarnishing their legacy. But the best thing about being a human being is that we can remember the good things and bury the bad. And the good by Oasis is the one of the greatest things to ever grace the musical world. Let’s look back, not in anger but cheer, to the glory days of Oasis with these 5 essential songs that should be on everyone’s playlist.
By the time Oasis released their fifth album their stardom had already faded away, no thanks to creative exhaustion and personal ego of the Liam brothers. But ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ was a much needed classic to bring the band back on track. Emotional and anthemic, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out' was a conventional yet memorable and the perfect trip down the memory lane.
How many bands can claim they rocked the world with their very first single? With ‘Supersonic’, Oasis had made it clear to everyone what they were about. “I need to be myself/ I can be no one else” is the signature of The Gallagher Brothers. With a pulpy guitar accompanied by Liam's angelic voice, ‘Supersonic’ gave the world something they never knew they needed.
A melancholic, heartfelt and nostalgic track mixing everything that makes us human being- optimism and sadness, hope and despair, desire and content and glory and modesty. Liam Gallagher induces all the emotion and agony in the vaguely beautiful lyrics of Noel. ‘Champagne Supernova' is a seven-minute psychedelic masterpiece showcasing everything good about Oasis and for me their best song ever.
Oasis, in their early days, was the closest thing to The Beatles the whole world had longed for. This ballad is the perfect example of their musical mastery. Adapting the opening piano from ‘Imagine’ and ‘Watching the Wheels', both by John Lennon and a must listen, as well as borrowing some of the lyrics from him, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ is the one of the best The Beatles( and Bob Dylan) tribute ever. It is poignant, astonishing and a timeless classic. And the best Coldplay song they never actually made( Coldplay at One Love Manchester).
What else? ‘Wonderwall’ wasn’t the biggest Oasis hit and many argue that it is not their best song either. Yet it had the most impact. Over the times, Wonderwall somehow became the signature Oasis song, thanks to beginner guitarists all around the world. The key to its popularity lies in its simplicity. The lyrics are easy to understand, the guitar is conventional and the background cello just sends chills down to the spine. The song isn’t about heartbreak or finding perfection but facing the various difficulties of life with your special one. ‘Wonderwall’ is captivating, memorable to the point it is sometimes annoying and heart-warming. Is it the greatest Oasis song ever? Maybe….
