Ages ago, people used to believe that anything which is green in colour and also which is not considered as an animal, is a plant.

Robert Whittaker presented fine divisions of plants, one of them being aquatic plants. They are also called as hydrophytes.

White Lotus

In different places it is called as Europian water lily or white water rose. If water is at least thirty to one hundred and fifty centi metres deep then the possibility of growth of this flower is enough. It is also very useful in the form of herbal medicines where its petals act as a source of alkaloids.

It's leaves can be up to thirty cm in diameter, and their height may vary from hundred to one hundred and fifty centi metre.Normally, they are white in colour, but their special red variety is found in the lake Fagertarn in the forest of Sweden.

Victoria Amazonia

There is a weird family of water lilies family, named as Nymphaeaceae. This family is in the shape of circular plate having its diameter of approximate three metre and its stalk of almost seven to eight metres of length. They generally floats above the water with their stalks submerged in water.

It is dominantly found in the shallow aqua of the Amazon river basin. Its flowers show white colour on the first night they are open and further become pink on it's second night.

Water Hyacinth

It floats freely in water with most of its count in South America. Size of its leaves may vary from ten to twenty centi metre. Interesting fact regarding their stalk is that they are long as well as spongy, still they have enough strength to carry a group of eight to fifteen flowers in a row, having their colour varying from pink to lavender.

When they are not in their bloom, we can even mistake them for a frog’s bit. It is considered as the one of the fastest growing plants. Common water hyacinth are such vigorous growers that they can double their population in two weeks.

Water Cabbage

It belongs to the arum family if vegetables. Its leaves make us feel like we are sitting in feathers, extremely soft and they sometimes take the shape of a rosette.

Length of leaves can vary from twelve to forteen centi metre but it is quite difficult to predict that this is having stem or not. They are normally light green in colour and are also covered by short hairs that form bowl-like structure to trap air bubbles. It is placed among the world’s most productive and useful freshwater hydrophytes. They are sometimes placed in aquariums to provide shelter to small fishes.

Conclusion

Plant listed above are very well adapted to the situations they face in ponds but once these places lose their existence it will be tough for the plants to sustain.
