Virasat-e-Khalsa, a majestic structure standing on the foothills of Shivalik range, is located in the city of Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. It is a museum designed by Moshe Safdie; renowned for its unique concept that narrates thrilling stories of culture and traditions of Sikhism. It is the most visited museum in India with over 5000 visitors on a daily basis.
The building merges with the surroundings to form a single cohesive edifice. Gwalior sandstone is the major construction material that reflects the fortress style architecture of North India.
The main features of the museum includes changing exhibition galleries (total 27 galleries), a research and reference library with reading space that is open to the outlook of water gardens and a huge auditorium to host seminars and cultural events.
A grand arcade bridge build over water garden leads to the museum which provides connectivity to the city. Public facilities and cafeteria are located at the foot of the bridge. Vast gardens and water bodies surrounds the building which gives the impression of a castle emerging out of gleaming water. The building comprises of a series of towers of different shapes creating a composition with nature.
Galleries at Virasat e Khalsa serves a unique picturesque experience with brilliant visuals and audio effects. An audio guide is provided to every visitor that helps in better understanding of exhibits in galleries.
Each gallery embraces different elements of Sikhism, that is demonstrated with diverse range of miniature artwork, handmade crafts, music and folk arts. Use of latest technology and animatronics presents a captivating immersive experience. One of the gallery has a huge beautiful kaleidoscope covering the whole ceiling. The patterns are stunning, making you want to look at it infinitely. It also features the biggest mural of India. It's height is more than three stories and covers the whole history of Sikhism through paintings, hand work, lightings and sound effects.
The museum also shows the struggle of Punjab in India- Pakistan Partition. The stories, depictions will get through your heart to see how miserable their conditions were. But they still fought with true strength like a hero in war.
