It began in 1873, when two men Levi Strauss and Jacob Devis took some denim, thread and a little metal and created the first pair of pants. They opened a big factory when Davis had order of sturdy pants that could withstand hard work. He made them stronger by placing copper rivets. When he wanted to patent, he wrote to Levi Strauss and became partners and then ‘JEAN’ was born. Fabric used was denim, literally ‘de Nimes’ or from ‘Nimes’.
Denim trousers originally was worn by male workers and referred to as “waist overalls”. Some changes were made by Levi and Jacob to make trousers to ‘BLUE JEAN’.
Levi Strauss added his signature red flag to the back pocket of jeans. Vogue magazine featured its first fashion model in ‘Denim’ on the cover as a fashion statement for women.
Soon during 1960s ‘blue jean’ was, embraced by Rock American Culture. Embroidery, bright colors, stone washing, patches were trends of hippie age. Bell-bottom flares, low-rise hip-huggers and double denim appeared.
With the Calvin Klein commercial “Nothing comes between me and my Calvin”, denim was brought to fashion forefront. The rise of hip-hop brought popularity of baggy jeans among men. More slouchy casual style was added with more pockets and tabs.
Skinny jean, low-rise jean with flare and boot cut denim were among the most popular style during 2000s. Pop star like Britney Spears popularize it.
‘Boyfriend jeans’ also became popular. Other vintage styles like denim overalls, jumpsuits and rompers also became a popular choice.
