Addiction is a complex condition. A physical or psychological need to do or to take out something from you to the point where it could be harmful. This is nothing but addiction. One may not even know if he/she is addicted to something. But slowly the individual falls in the trap and finds it difficult to come out.
Commonly, addictions are associated with gambling, drugs, alcohol, nicotine which results in effects like nausea, abdominal pain and increased strain on liver. This leads to chance of significant liver damage. But then there are other addictions too — Work, Smartphones, Computers. Workaholics being obsessed with their work, suffer from physical exhaustion. Family, social life suffers as well. Spending hours on computers and smartphones lead to so many problems. Addiction damages a person's work performance and relationships. It affects the functioning of brain and body. Severe loss of control and failed attempts to quit is common.
So, how to get rid of addictions?
Address the reasons as to why you got obsessed with a particular thing, what led toturning it into an addiction. Write the harmful effects and list the reasons why you want to quit. Read them again and again. Every time you feel you cannot hold yourself anymore, read this list. Certain individuals may act as triggers, so learn to refuse. One cannot quit addictions in a day. So start ramping down your habit. Do something creative to fill the time, to fill the gap. Exercises open a lot more windows for improved health and could lessen the blow of withdrawal. Decide whom you want to win — your urge or your determination. Do not feel shy to seek help.
We all are addicted — to social media, to our comfort zone, to excuses, to so many behaviors which contradict our goals. Shouldn't we get out of these too? Remove or alter things in your environment that opposes your commitment. Change your lifestyle. Make your own strategy and work accordingly. Remember your values, they would help you in fighting addictions. How? For example — A father who himself smokes cannot tell his son not to follow him. So if he wants his son to stay away from nicotine, he should himself give upon the habbit of smoking.
Remember 'An over indulgence of anything can intoxicate'. So gear up and fight your addictions.
