After a grueling session of inner conflict, I decided to write on the topic of choosing engineering as a career option. Often misconstrued and mocked at, engineering in India has always been a topic of great scrutiny and subject to loud reactions of condescension. Since the number of colleges that offer courses in engineering have risen tremendously in the recent times, it is but without reason that people think that being an engineer is a cake walk and can be done by any Tom, Dick or Harry. Nobody understands the pain and the pressure one has to undergo to become an able engineer.

But I do not blame the people and society much because most of the engineers who graduate from colleges with a bachelor in technology degree, have zero knowledge of the application of engineering subjects. The degrees remain as good as the quality of the paper and pulp is. Engineering is a fancy word and appeals to the students in the beginning but they do not know about the techniques and the methods that are required to be learnt in the due course of time. Everybody is jumping on the bandwagon and not caring enough to be a good somebody. Students just want to be ‘anybodies’ , they want to disappear in crowds which is already lost, lose themselves in the multitudes of other students who also aspire to take up the same course as them and increase the density of people doing nothing for the country. They are no longer introducing new faculties in the society and promulgating no change. Everything has come to a standstill. This stagnation has been a product of not following your dreams and moving aimlessly in the pursuit of something which isn’t destined to be yours.

I believe, engineering should be done only when technological, scientific and skeptical discoveries are your call. When challenging problems and tricky science problems put you into a daze and you cannot sleep till you have worked on it relentlessly. With passion, a genius shall be born and then will you not only become a good engineer but also an able employee and a good citizen, trying to contribute to the development of the nation.
