Bikes of all shapes and sizes are great to get around, bur not so great at being carried around. So, folding bikes have become the obvious solution to a long problem, and have revolutionized what bikes are capable of!
A folding bike is any bicycle that is designed to fold down into a compact form, making it easier to carry, store anywhere, or fit into areas that you normally can't take a regular bike. Folding bikes vary in their actual folding methods, and in terms of the bikes actual components as well.
The folding methods, and bike design can opt for faster assembly, a many other variances that help to differentiate between types and brands. In most cases, the bike is designed to compact down to where both the tires are sitting side by side, to share the same circular space. The handlebars and seat post are able to be broken down in any number of ways, including telescopic tubes that collapse into each other. Folding bikes continue to sit at the forefront of bike evolution, as an increasing number of companies are constantly striving for new ways to improve folding bikes, mainly egarding the overall ride quality, weight, and pedal efficiency.
The history of folding bikes actually dates back to the late 1890s, when Europeans took an interest in creating a form of folding bikes. Later, Around 1900, a man developed a folding version of his own 'Pedersen bicycles' for the British Army. During the second world war, the British War Office commissioned the creation of a folding bike that was strong enough to take the impact on the ground, when being dropped out of a parachute. This bike ended up being used for most of the war. After the war, the folding bike was largely forgotten about for many years.
Folding and electric bikes have proven fertile ground for innovation recently, but what about bikes that are both electric and foldable? Three years in the making, the Impossible bike from a team of engineers folds up to fit in a backpack, and it's capable of reaching 20 kmph.
A folding bike has obvious appeal, with the compact design allowing users to store it under a desk at work, put it on a bus or throw it in the car. So, it took Impossible technology 3 years of hard work, dedication and research to bring us a folding electric bicycle that folds and unfolds in 4 easy steps. When folded, the 'impossible' is that small that it can fit easily into backpack. Even though, the size may be something truly confounding, this little powerhouse, packed with ten 2900 MAH 10A 3.6V batteries and a lightweight motor.
This is definitely one of the most innovative projects that we have seen on kick starter, and we highly suggest that you can get involved.
The Impossible technology team behind the bike says the concept still needs some refining before it is taken to market and is currently running a kick starter campaign through which it hopes to raise funds to further develop the brushless electric motor.
