You will probably never go to Moon, swim with whales, eat with Bear grylls, or sing onstage with the Rolling stones. But if virtual reality comes into the situation, you might be able to do all these things without even stepping outside your home. Coming to our topic, Virtual Reality is a believable, interactive 3D computer created world that you can explore so, you feel you are really been there, both mentally and physically. It is like the machine definition in the film three idiots right? Okay, We will discuss this in a simpler way.
Virtual Reality(VR) means experiencing things through our computers which really don't exist. This idea does not sound especially new. When you look at an amazing monalisa painting, you are experiencing the beauty of monalisa which was painted decades ago- so, that's a kind of virtual reality. In the same way, if you are listening to classical or instrumental music with your eyes closed, and started dreaming about something else, is alive example of virtual reality.
Believable: You really need to involve in your virtual world, or the illusion of Virtual Reality may disappear.
Interactive: As you move around, VR world needs to move with you. You can watch a 3D movie, and transported up to the moon, but it's not interactive in any sense.
Computer-generated: Only powerful machines, with a realistic 3D computer graphics, are fast enough to make believable and interactive.
Explorable: A VR world needs to be big and detailed enough for you to explore. Then only viewers will be more interested.
Immersive: To be both believable and interactive, Virtual Reality needs to engage both body, and the mind.
Virtual Reality is one of the offshoots of technology, and it has impacted on human lives in many ways. There are several applications of VR technology in human lives. Some of them are discussed here:
VR is used to train soldiers in a simulated battlefield. This gives soldiers the opportunity to learn without risk of being killed or injured. They can simulate many kinds of battle field scenarios. All the scenarios include fight simulation, medical administration in the battle field, virtual boot camps and several other scenarios.
The head mounted display units are distributed to the viewers of the movie. When the VR effect of this unit is combining with speakers that have been scattered all over the theatre, it gives serious immersion. In fact, you feel like you are a part of the movie.
Prototypes of any proposed vehicle will be uploaded on the virtual reality platform where everyone can view and make necessary corrections if needed.
VR is being used to simulate a flying experience to train and test trainee pilots. The simulation feels like flying a plane in the air. This is one of the oldest application of virtual reality.
Virtual Reality is not only used in the movies, military, automobile manufacturing or in the aviation but also used in the museums, educational purposes, businesses, medical field, real estate and many more.
