Now-a-days electricity is considered as one of the basic needs of human beings. Current power transmission system uses transmission lines which are costlier and there exists a certain transmission loss. One maintainable technology leading this charge is Wireless Power Transmission(WPT). It is also known as Inductive Power Transmission(IPT).

Types of Wireless Power Transmission

WPT is an existing technology which was demonstrated by Nikola Tesla in 1980. The 3 main systems used for Wireless Electricit Transmission are Solar cells, Microwaves, and Resonance.

Microwave Power transmission

Power transmission via radio waves can be made more directional, allowing longer-distance power beaming, with shorter wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, typically in the microwave range. A rectenna may be used to convert the microwave energy back into electricity.

Inductive Coupling Power Transmission

The power transmission takes place between the two conductive materials through mutual inductance. The general example of inductive coupling power transmission is a transformer.

Laser Power Transmission

LASER is used to transfer power in the form of light energy and the power is converted to electric energy at the receiver end. The transmitted LASER light is received by the photo-voltaic cells, that converts the light into electrical signals. Usually, it uses optical-fiber cables for transmission.

Benefits and Applications

  • WPT system completely reduces existing high-tension power transmission cables, substations, and towers between the consumers and generating station.

  • The cost of the distribution and transmission become less.

  • The power could be transmitted to place to which the wired transmission is not possible.

  • WPT is used in moving targets like fuel-free-electric vehicles, fuel- free airplanes, fuel-free rockets and moving robots.

  • The other applications of WPT are Wireless power source or Ubiquitous Power Source, RF Power Adaptive Rectifying Circuits and Wireless sensors.

MERITS

  • This method would reduce the cost of cables, towers, and substations.

  • System would resuce the cost of electrical energy used by the consumer.

  • Electricity can be transmitted without wires so there will not be any transmission or distribution loss.

  • The power failure because of short circuit and fault on cables would never exist in the transmission.

  • There will not be any distance limit to transfer wireless transmission.

DEMERITS

  • Implementation of wireless power transmission is very costly.

  • Common fear, the effect of microwave radiation.
