The Amazing Facts About Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs first appeared about 230 million years ago. These amazing reptiles dominated life on Earth but they became extinct 65 million years ago. The first dinosaurs to be described Megalosaurus by William Buckland in 1824 and Iguanodon by Gideon Mantell in 1825.

• The biggest dinosaurs were all herbivores. Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, measured up to 15 m long and weighed 60,000 kg or more. Its jaws were packed with 60 teeth, the biggest of which was 23 cm long.

• The largest flying prehistoric creatures were pterosaurs. The wings of the biggest pterosaur was measured 10.96 m from tip to tip.

• The largest known dinosaur egg belonged to Hypselosaurus. The 100 million-year-old egg measures 30 by 25.5 cm, about three times the volume of an ostrich egg.
