The otherworldly northern lights, or aurora borealis, begin high in Earth's atmosphere, at altitudes from 60 to more than 250 miles. Auroras are formed due to disturbances in magnetosphere caused by solar wind, which results in colorful, dancing light show. The display occurs in many colours, although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yollow, green, blue and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of lights to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains, or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.
