The Rulers and their story

When the series begins, Winterfell is ruled by Lord Eddard Stark, who is the Lord of Winterfell and the Warden of The North. Eddard Stark has six children; Robb Stark, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Brandon Stark, Rickon Stark, and Jon Snow, who is assumed to be his bastard son, but is actually his sister's son. After the execution of Eddard Stark by Joffery Baratheon who is the King of the Seven Kingdoms, Lady Catelyn Stark, the Queen, commands Winterfell and soon Robb Stark travels with his army towards South, and being the eldest, is named as the King in the North as the Northmen demand a free kingdom in the North.

However, in the absence of Robb and his mother Catelyn and the northern army, Theon Greyjoy of the House Grejoy, who lived as a hostage since childhood in Winterfell after his father lost to Eddard, betrays Robb, who was a friend to him, to impress his father. He then attacks Winterfell with 30 men and takes the castle under his seize. However, Theon realizes his mistake and fails to keep his control over the castle. Ramsay Bolton, son of Roose Bolton, who is Robb Stark's commander is sent to take care of Winterfell. Instead, Robb and his family are betrayed by Roose Bolton and killed and Ramsay Bolton sacks Winterfell and becomes the new Lord of Winterfell. For a long time, Winterfell is ruled by Ramsay. He forcefully marries Sansa Stark, to get the Northmen in his support.

However, soon after, Sansa elopes with Theon's help and Jon Snow returns from Castle Black and attacks Winterfell and wins the Battle of the Bastards, and the Starks retake Winterfell. Jon Snow is then named as the King in the North. After defeating the Night King with the help of Daenerys Targaryen, who was to be the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Jon Snow kills her as she burns the entire city of King's Landing, killing thousands of innocents. Due to this, Jon is sent to Castle Black to serve justice to Daenerys' followers, and finally, Brandon Stark, voted as the new King, declares the North as a separate kingdom and Lady Sansa Stark becomes the Queen in the North and the Lady of Winterfell.
