Management Lessons From Mickey Mouse

Childhood is the most important phase of our lives. That's the age when we actually learn new things and ask several questions with a curious mind. And that's the age when we meet our first friend, cartoons. We start watching cartoons even before the full development of our brains. As mentioned in an article, 90% of the brain develops at the age of 5 and we start watching cartoons at the age of around 3. Hence, it is really important that we see things that are teaching us something valuable. Hence, to make a note of this, I have prepared a series of #wrytups of the life lessons given by several different cartoons that also help us in our businesses which I will be sharing one by one...

Mickey Mouse

So the first cartoon in our series definitely had to be our most favourite Mickey Mouse. He was born in the year 1928 as the mascot of The Walt Disney Company by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Several varied cartoons were telecasted thereafter but mickey mouse still rules our hearts. Mickey always has something to teach us.

• Being proactive

When you know you have a task to complete, the only way to accomplish it is by being proactive. No matter what the task is, Mickey always stands first in the queue to fulfil that task.

If we consider into the management, it is important that the manager should be proactive so as to forecast the future happenings and be prepared with the precautions. Otherwise, management may face troubles later on.

For e.g. When there were forecasting of heavy rains in South Gujarat, Indian government had made all the provisions for the safety of the people in prior.

• Helping hand

It never mattered to who is facing the problem, Mickey has always been there to help his friends. Say it be Goofy, say it be Donald, Mickey always helps. Mickey Mouse also teaches us to help our enemies in trouble. In fact he never promotes enmity.

When you are working in a setup of more than one person, you should always be the one who helps because ‘Sharing is Caring’ and the one who shares actually is the one who learns.

• Fighting against the hurdles

We all must have seen the cartoon character Pete and the way he always troubles Mickey and his friends. Despite all the trouble, Mickey never loses his patience. He always remains calm and fights against all the hurdles without losing faith.

Several uncertainties may occur in a business, we all have to fight against them with all the faith and find a solution to them. Because crying over a problem doesn't really help.

For e.g. We all know Late Mr. Manoj Parikar, the then chief minister of Goa. He was suffering from Pancreatic Cancer. Everyone had advised him to quit and take proper treatment. But he didn't let his health come in the way of his work. He served for his place till his last breath.

• Being Optimist

No matter what the situation is, Mickey always teaches us to be positive and to be confident about oneself. He always teaches us to find the best in any good or bad situation.

Nothing is risk free in this world. So the only key to work is by staying positive and always moving with a backup plan. Otherwise we may never be able to move a step further.

For e.g. No one can be a better example than Mr. Modi in this case. Everywhere, in the news and social media the video of Mr. Modi consoling the ISRO chief is viral. He beautifully shared the emotions and gave hopes to him.

• Spread Happiness

Has anyone ever seen a sad Mickey Mouse? I don't think so. Because that's what Mickey Mouse has been meant for, to spread happiness all around. Anyone can get happy by looking at his pleasing smile and listening to his charming voice.

A good manager always bring happiness and positivity around. Because S/he knows it very well that only happy minds can work effectively. Nowadays, special officers are also appointed as happiness officers for this task. This clearly shows the importance of happiness in and around.

• Brings everyone together

This is one of the best leadership skills that Mickey teaches us. He delegates the work to everyone according to their skills and fulfils a task by bringing everyone together.

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” - Helen Keller. If you want to be a good manager, you are bound to know that you cannot do all things alone. Hence, taking everyone together is the only key.

Besides all this, we all know how Mickey Mouse was born merely as a drawing in a train journey and how he filled the pockets of Walt Disney with all his charm and innocence. I believe watching Mickey Mouse is a must.
