"beta kya kar raheho life mai??", to all the Indian youngsters out there, I hear you! These are the exact words that we often get to hear from our parents, neighbors, relatives, etc, growing up as an Indian. Indian parents cannot resist themselves in questioning their kids' abilities. For them, it's either Engineering or Doctor and nothing else has "scope".
But.......
Every single day we come across the news - most of the Engineering students can't get jobs, students falling behind in their core subjects, etc.
Why?
Engineering jobs have had to come almost to the brink of extinction. Yet, today's engineering students believe that they can pull it off just by having certificates on their resume??
Every time I raise the doubt of placements and the scrutinizing process of various companies in our college, there are many people who would just say, "what are you so tensed about? we can buy certificates from different organizations, no one's ever going to reject us, com'mon now cheer up! young lady"
To all the guys and girls who are convinced that just a certification can get you a job, here's the thing...
I once asked one of my friends who was studying in NIT Warangal, why he didn't get a job though he has a lot of certifications on his resume, also, while he was pursuing his B.Tech from one of the reputed institutions; he said,
"I wasn't capable enough to answer when questions were asked related to those certifications, also they were not even close to my stream of engineering and the job I wanted to apply for".
Makes sense?!
One thing that should be very clear is that every Cert is not given equal importance. Fortunately or unfortunately this might help you know how much a certification is valid that is put on the resume which is of great value.
If you want any organization to pay you for working with them, you will have to not just let them know that you have studied that particular topic but to prove them what's written on your resume.
It is an unacceptable fact that the companies would want their fresh recruits to have basic industrial knowledge. Just a 'ONE NIGHT FIGHT' is not sufficient enough to clear an interview and get a job.
Start with the certifications that matter for your career and train yourselves up!
Skills definitely matter.
Search for the certs that are useful in your field.
No one's ever stuck with a specific career path, be flexible enough to learn more 'cause the most valuable certs are the advanced ones.
RightNow's computer-world looks for resumes that indicate hard work and the willingness to learn and grow according to the chosen career. It is the student's responsibility to decide what they want and what they can do to achieve it.
The silver lining: Yes, Certs can definitely light up your resume, but, you are the chosen one only if you live up to it.
