Hey You…
I know you never wanted any of this to happen.
Not like this.
Not this quickly.
Not in a way that arrived without warning, without preparation, without allowing either of us the luxury of taking a long breath before everything changed.
Some stories are written slowly, with careful chapters and predictable turns. But ours felt like a page being torn away before the ink had even dried. One moment there was certainty in the existence of "us," and the next there was only silence—an unfamiliar silence that somehow learned how to occupy every corner of my life.
And the hardest part is that I understand.
I understand that life doesn't always follow the plans we make. I understand that people don't wake up intending to hurt someone they once cared about. I understand that circumstances, fears, timing, responsibilities, and realities can become stronger than emotions.
I understand all of it.
And yet, despite understanding, the pain remains.
Not because I blame you.
Not because I am angry.
Not because I believe you owed me something you couldn't give.
But because understanding a wound doesn't stop it from hurting.
Every day, I find myself trying to let go.
Quietly.
Privately.
Without making noise.
Without making my pain someone else's responsibility.
I carry it alone because that's what I've learned to do.
I replay memories only when nobody is watching. I revisit conversations that have long since ended. I hear echoes of laughter that belong to a different version of my life, and for a few fleeting moments, everything feels alive again.
Then reality arrives.
And I remember that memories are places we can visit but never stay.
People often talk about moving forward as if it is a straight road. As if healing is a destination. As if one day you simply wake up and discover that the ache is gone.
But for me, healing has felt different.
It has felt like carrying a home that no longer exists.
It has felt like reaching for someone who isn't there.
It has felt like learning how to walk with an invisible weight that nobody else can see.
The strange thing is that the pain isn't always loud.
Sometimes it appears in the smallest moments.
A song that unexpectedly sounds like you.
A place that remembers your presence better than I can forget it.
A random thought in the middle of a busy day.
A dream that allows me to meet you again, only to lose you all over when I wake up.
Pain isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes it is just quiet longing.
The kind that settles into your heart and lives there peacefully, refusing to leave.
What hurts the most isn't what happened.
It's what could have happened.
It's the future I accidentally built around the idea of you.
The future where your voice remained familiar.
The future where my victories were celebrated with you.
The future where difficult days became easier because you existed within them.
The future where growing older didn't feel frightening because I believed you would be standing beside me.
That future became real to me.
Not because I demanded it.
Not because I expected guarantees.
But because loving someone naturally paints them into tomorrow.
And now every time I try to imagine the years ahead, something feels unfinished.
Like a sentence missing its ending.
Like a melody that never reaches its final note.
Like a book that closes before the last chapter is written.
I try.
God knows I try.
I tell myself that life continues.
I remind myself that people survive heartbreak every day.
I convince myself that acceptance is necessary.
And sometimes I even succeed.
Sometimes I feel light again.
Sometimes I laugh without forcing it.
Sometimes entire days pass before sadness comes looking for me.
But even in those moments, there is a space within me that still carries your shape.
Not because I am trapped in the past.
Not because I refuse to move forward.
But because some people become part of the way we imagine life itself.
You became part of mine.
And that's why letting go has never been as simple as saying goodbye.
Because I wasn't just saying goodbye to you.
I was saying goodbye to countless moments that never got the chance to exist.
I was saying goodbye to ordinary mornings.
To future conversations.
To years we never reached.
To memories we never created.
And somehow those unwritten memories hurt as much as the real ones.
The truth is, I don't need answers anymore.
I don't need explanations.
I don't need reasons.
Life has already moved beyond the point where any explanation could erase what was felt.
What remains now is simply honesty.
And the honest truth is this:
Every little thing I try to let go of, I end up reliving alone.
Every memory I pack away finds its way back to me.
Every version of tomorrow I imagine somehow searches for your presence.
Not because I am waiting.
Not because I expect anything.
But because somewhere deep inside my heart, the future still feels unfinished unless you are living it with me.
Maybe one day that feeling will fade.
Maybe time will gently soften the edges of what's broken.
Maybe the emptiness will eventually learn how to become peace.
I hope it does.
Truly, I do.
But until then, this is my truth.
A truth that carries no blame.
No resentment.
No accusations.
Only love that had nowhere to go.
Only memories that still breathe.
Only a heart learning how to survive the distance between what is and what could have been.
So, hey you...
If you ever wonder whether you mattered, whether your presence left an imprint, whether your absence was ever felt—
The answer lives in every unfinished tomorrow I still struggle to imagine.
Because despite all my efforts to heal, to move forward, and to carry this pain quietly...
A part of me still looks at the future and whispers,
"It would have felt complete if you had been there.
