By voting, citizens have the power of choosing the government which will run the country. Every citizen, in a proper democratic country has the right to vote. This year, 2019, India will once again vote, to form the government. Only, citizens above the age of 18 can vote. An adult will vote for one MP (Member of Parliament) candidate and one MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) candidates, from the other candidates contesting for that post in a constituency. A new government is formed every 5 years.

Members of Lok Sabha (House of the People) or the lower house of India's Parliament are elected by people, one candidate from a constituency. A citizen can only vote for the candidates from his/her constituency. These members from each constituency are called members of the parliament. There are 543 members of the parliament. This house meets in New Delhi, to discuss about the laws. Members of Lok Sabha from a party form the central government (depending upon the the majority of MPs of a party, otherwise forming an alliance). Leader of this government, becomes the Prime Minister of India.

Members of Rajya Sabha or the upper house of India's Parliament are elected by Lok Sabha members. Any law is made, or a bill is passed only if members of both the houses, Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, pass it.

Members ofLegislative Assemblies ,are elected by citizens of a constituency. An adult of India can vote in his/her constituency, for the candidate from the corresponding constituency. Members of each state legislative assembly, meet in their respective states to discuss about laws, etc of the state. Depending n the majority of MLAs in the State Assembly, the state government is formed and the leader becomes the Chief Minister of that state.

A citizen above the age of 18 can only vote in that constituency. Every person who votes, is marked with an inedible ink. Voting is done through EVMs, which shows a list of the candidates, and the voter can select the candidate, he/she wants to vote for. If a voter, doesn’t want to choose any candidate, there is a NOTA (None of the above) option.

Since, the people form the government through voting, it is essential and important that every eligible citizen votes. Since the citizens vote for the formation of the fovernment, the government is answerable to the people.Every vote is important because the government is responsible for the development of a country.
