Recently, I was on the bus, going home. A young woman was riding a scooter, and a car was trying toovertake her. The driver of the car abruptly overtook her, and she almost lost her balance. Fortunately, she regained her balance and everything was ok. The driver, of the bus I wason, looked at this and said that he was not sure why parents give girls vehicles, they aimlessly roam the city and that girls are given too much freedom to do whatever they want these days. He did not mention a thing about the way the car overtook her. I really wanted to tell him that the lady didn’t do anything wrong, but decided against it.

There is another incident I would like to mention. One day, my uncle was telling about how a kingdom fell into ruin because of a single girl. So, the story goes something like this. There were two powerful neighbouring kingdoms, let’s just say kingdom A and B. Kingdoms A and B were rivals. The king of the kingdom A had a daughter, while the king of the kingdom B was a young man. The King of A, invited suitors from all the neighbouring kingdoms except from kingdom B.But the daughter liked the king of B and hence wrote a letter to him, about it.

The king of B went to kingdom A and secretly brought the king’s daughter to his kingdom, and eventually they got married. Meanwhile, there was an invader from a far away land, who tried capturing kingdom B many times, but failed. Once the invader learned about this incident, he approached king of A, who was shocked and angry about his daughter’s betrayal, and proposed a plan of attacking kingdom B. Since, the king of A was very angry, he accepted this proposal. Both of them together defeated the king of B and killed him.

While they were celebrating their victory, the invader killed the king of A, telling him that he could not trust a person who betrayed his own neighbours and joined hands with a stranger, to kill his daughter’s husband. In the end, the invader was able to capture all the kingdoms in that land, and turned everyone into his slaves.

The moral of the story, according to my uncle, is that many kingdoms were captured, and suffered only because a girl decided to elope with another king. Had the daughter listened to her father; this might not have happened. I was stunned with such conclusion. I agree that the king of A took such a decision only because of his daughter. But why was he not wary of the invader? Wasn’t he a king? Shouldn’t he be wiser? The outcome would have been same, even if the daughter had not run away. If the invader had approached the king with the same proposal, the king of A would have accepted it, since A and B were rivals. If the girl is to be really blamed, then I think it is only right to blame both the kings, since they were not wise enough to know the consequences of their actions.

People just try so hard to push the blame onto girls and women, if they don’t follow what their elders in the family and society say. If a woman doesn’t listen to her husband, or if a girl doesn’t listen to her father, she is wrong according to people, who don’t even know anything about the incident. Is it so hard for people to see women expressing their opinions? I am not saying that women are superior or that they are always correct. I am implying that people always try to blame women for anything wrong that happens in their lives.

If you don't think that this happens, you are living under a rock. Please educate yourself.

That is why, woman empowerment is important. So that, women can freely put forth their views and the society doesn't suppress them. So that, women can live a life of their own, instead of being controlled by others.
