About the Author

The author’s name is “Thiruvalluvar” commonly known as “Valluvar”. The details regarding his birthplace, occupatione are still under discussion. Some say he was born in Madurai,while some opine he was born in Mylapore(A place in Chennai) or “Thirunainarkuruchi” ,a district in Kanyakumari. His occupation might have been weaving or agriculture. In spite of so many confusions ,there are sources saying that his spouse is “Vasuki”. There are so many stories which reveal the love prevailing between them. There is a separate book called “Thiruvalluva Mallai” means “'Garland for Valluvar”, which is composed only to praise valluvar by 55 poets. This was compiled in the 10th century.

Why is tirukkural praised so much?

It is a book which is not confined to a particular region, country , caste, community or gender. It is common to all people in the world and also applicable even to this modern era. It has all the topics in it, which is required for a human being to lead a peaceful and happy life. It is not only meant for a commoner, but also for all sects of society.

For example,

It has even given ideas to a king for governing his empire not only for those days but also for the present days to administer the modern state. He has also given the idea of Democracy in his book.

Each chapter contains such topics as Honesty, Non-violence, Agriculture, Respect, Gratitude, Sober behaviour in life, Intelligence, Money, Humanity, Discipline for life and lot more. It is not possible to explain all the 133 topics present in it.

  • It has been translated in English by 40 people and has been translated into 26 languages by various scholars

  • Various researches claim that Queen Elizabeth used to read it daily.

Memorials for Thiruvalluvar

● There is a temple built for thiruvalluvar in the 16th century at Mylapore in Chennai.

● There are also temples for Valluvar at many places in Tamil Nadu.

● There are statues of valluvar erected in Chennai, Kannyakumari, Bangalore, Haridwar, Puttalam, Singapore, and London.

● The tallest of these is the 133-feet (40.6 m) stone statue of Valluvar erected in 2000 atop a small island in the town of Kanyakumari on the southernmost part of the Indian peninsula where the Arabian sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian ocean confluence.

Though this book has been so much appreciated and celebrated throughout the world,many of us do not know such a book exists.
