What is Agriculture?

Agriculture is done for producing food, fibre and many other desired products by the cultivation of plants. The process of agriculture is called “farming”.

Agriculture in India

India is a country, which has “agriculture” as its major and primary resource. According to survey in 2018, agriculture contributes 17 - 18% to GDP. Here more than 50% of the population is depended on agriculture. India is the world’s largest producer of pulses, spices and spice products and also emerged has second highest producer of Hoticulture.

But will this be the same in India? Are people involved in agribusiness happy? Will rest of the people take interest to be a part of this?

For all the questions the answer will be “No”.Agriculture is under a great alarm for existence in India.

We must be gifted to be in such a land which has all prosperity and Mother Nature’s blessing to us. There are countries, which cannot farm on its land due to the soil and climatic conditions. But are we aware of it?

The importance given to agriculture in ancient days

In Tamil there is a great ancient and antique poetry book called “Tirukkural” written by Tiruvalluvar of Tamil Nadu. It is praised as "the Universal Veda". It has 130 topics with 1330 hymns(kural). Each hymn has two lines having seven words; this is same for all the 1330 hymns present in it. Each topic contains 10 hymns in it. In such a great book there a topic on “Agriculture” named “uzhavu” in Tamil. These hymns have shown the greatness and need of agriculture in the world.

Who ploughing eat their food, they truly live:

The rest to others bend subservient, eating what they give.-Hymn no 1033 topic 104

They alone live who live by agriculture; all others lead a cringing, dependent life.

They nothing ask from others, but to askers give,

Who raise with their own hands the food on which they live.-Hymn no 1035 topic 104

Those whose nature is to live by manual labour will never beg but give something to those who beg.

These hymns are translated from “Tirukkural”.

In short

Agriculture is the pivot on which world revolves. We all are dependent on farmers for our living. They will never send the people empty handed who beg to them and they will never beg others. Even saints and other living including ants will not have food if farmers don’t farm.

We never even know that what issues farmers are facing. Farmers are committing suicide because they are unable to pay their debts, but people who have to pay thousands of crores to our country are happily leaving in some other country.

No one would like to do farming or entertain others to do farming. Many farmers dispose their land for a small amount, inorder to earn a livelihood. The remaining land left over is treated with pesticides, which is really not good for health.

Each farmer has to sacrifices so much for us to eat happily on our dining table. Being a farmer isn’t an easy job. No computer on earth can download food for you to eat. Now you may think, “What we can do for this?”

Lets see how we can improve agricultures growth in India and help farms

  • Improvising farming, farmers and farming technique.

  • Government can help farmers by allowing them to fix a rate by themselves and break all the mediators in between.

  • Giving them current, water and necessary things for farming at a cheaper price.

  • Selling agricultural lands can be made as a punishable offense.

  • Awareness must be created amongst people regarding the needs of agriculture.

  • But some reasons such as storm, hurricane and other climatic conditions too spoil farming in times, Government can help by giving relieves for needy.

Now we all know that, most of these rules are already in play, yet there is no improvement in Agriculture. This maybebecause, the aid given by the government doesn’t reach the desired people. If Government is able to look after that and solve it. I am damn sure India will be the first agriculture and farmers will be happy in doing farming.

To most people, this is just dirt. To a farmer, it is potential”

To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven….a time to be born & a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted.”

These quotes were created to celebrate farmers and farming.

Let’s also celebrate farmers and farming.
