Aston Martin’s history in Formula 1 is a story of ambition, setbacks and an extraordinary return. What is also extraordinary is the Formula 1 section of 1xBet, which you can visit at any moment and explore its excellent bets.
Although the marque is best known for its luxury sports cars and endurance-racing success, its connection with Grand Prix racing dates back to 1922. Its first serious attempt at the Formula 1 World Championship, however, came much later, in 1959.
The company’s first works Formula 1 car was the DBR4, developed under the leadership of owner Sir David Brown. Nowadays, with 1xBet punters can also bet on the fastest Formula 1 cars too.
It was a front-engined car that had already been overtaken technologically by the rapid development of mid-engined designs. Aston Martin nevertheless made an encouraging start when Roy Salvadori finished second in the non-championship International Trophy at Silverstone in May 1959. In World Championship races, Salvadori achieved sixth places at both the British and Portuguese Grands Prix, but the team struggled to compete with increasingly advanced rivals.
For 1960, Aston Martin introduced the lighter DBR5, but it remained fundamentally based on the outdated front-engined concept. The results failed to improve significantly, and Aston Martin withdrew from Formula 1 after the British Grand Prix that year. The company subsequently concentrated on sports-car racing, where it enjoyed much greater success.
The Aston Martin name returned to Formula 1 decades later, initially as a sponsor of Red Bull Racing from 2016 to 2020. A much more significant comeback followed when Lawrence Stroll’s consortium invested in Aston Martin. This eventually led to the appearance of Aston Martin as a Formula 1 team of its own from 2021.
Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll formed the team’s first driver pairing. Vettel delivered Aston Martin’s first modern Formula 1 podium with second place at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The team continued developing, and in 2023 Fernando Alonso joined Stroll and immediately transformed its competitiveness. Alonso scored 6 podiums in the first 8 races, helping Aston Martin finish 5th in the constructors’ championship.
Today, Aston Martin remains focused on becoming a championship contender. Its Formula 1 story has therefore come full circle: from the unsuccessful DBR4 and DBR5 of the late 1950s to a modern works team investing heavily in 3 elements:
technology;
facilities;
and world-class personnel.
Its history demonstrates that in Formula 1, setbacks can be temporary, but ambition can endure for generations.
