Gender Biasness...

In India, son preference is very strong and pervasive and has been frequently cited as one of the major obstacle for reducing the national fertility level. Furthermore, gender biasness is considered as one of the major contributing factors of female foeticide in Indian communities. In India son is viewed as profitable proposition and the daughter as life time expenses and responsibility. Studies in India have identified three major factors that underline gender biasness, One is economic utility of son i.e. son provide family labour on the farms in rural area, helping in family business, earning wages and supporting parents in old age . Secondly, son brings daughter-in-law in his family and provides additional domestic help to his family and also brings dowry in family. Third another important advantage of having son in sociocultural utility.

According to Hindu tradition, sons are needed to kindle the funeral pyre of their parents after death and to help in the salvation of their souls. In an effort to have son, many couples continue to have children even after achieving their desired family size. United Nations and similar national and international bodies have framed different laws for women development and to reduce and eliminate the gender biasness in the society but no such perceptible improvement has been achieved so far. So, to make any substantial change in parental attitude towards daughters, it is necessary to change the social and economic root of gender biasness.

If we think making one superior to the other will bring empowerment, then we are mistaken. By making masculine superior or feminine superior will not bring well being to our lives. What needs to bring into is sense of equality among us. The utmost need is a rise in our identity beyond the physical structure. Why are we constantly watching someone as man or woman?They are basically identified by their body parts or their reproductive organs? If you are identified with your body part then at least choose “brain”. There are only certain places where it matters to be man or woman otherwise it should not matter to you whether somebody is man or woman. When somebody’s being a man or woman matters to you at every point of life, then we reducing the society into very crass way of doing things.

Women are the same species as man on this planet. If we don’t function as “one” on this planet at least functioning as one species must happen on this land.

Women should succeed as women not as men and the same goes to men. This constant gaze of notifying someone as man and woman is causing destruction to the society. Rise above all this and move forward to the idea of being original and equal.
