There are a plethora of words we mispronounce regularly . And when it comes to cuisines, an endless list of food items remain to be spelled,pronounced and tasted, correctly . Unfortunately, not every dish that appears on an Indian menu sounds as enticing and easy as Biryani and chole bhature. Having invaded the Indian platter, French and Italian food have been out there, dominantly serving the Indian taste buds and equally tormenting the minds with the quirky pronounciations. Here goes a list of some food items that are usually pronounced incorrectly.

Quesadilla- K-SAY-DEE-AH
A Mexican dish consisting of a tortilla ( a Mexican flatbread resembling chapatti) filled with cheese, a mixture of vegetables and meat, onions. It is folded and then cooked or fried.

Fajita- FUH-HEE-TUH

It resembles Quesadilla. The fillings differ a bit.
(Basically, both the cuisine form for an international version for a desi Kathi roll)

Lasange- LUH-ZAHN-YUH

Thin layers of flat pasta, with filling of vegetables, sauce, meat and cheese in between the layers.

MACARON VS. MACAROON

There has been a wide misconception regarding the pronounciation as well as the difference between these

Macaron- MACK-UH-RON, are cookies, round in shape, with a wide range of colour and flavours. Primarily made of almond flour and filled with gnache, some kind of jam or buttercream. They have a crisp outer shell and slightly chewy from the inside.

Macaroon- MACK-UH-ROON, is a flourless cookie made of coconut. Also round in shape and is sometimes coated with chocolate.

Parmesan- PAR-MAH-ZON
Parmesan is one of the many varieties of cheese. It is an Italian dry, hard cheese.

Gouda- HOW-DA
Gouda is also a variety of cheese, originating from the Netherlands. It is made from cow’s milk and aged for months.

Guacamole- GWA-KAH-MOE-LAY

Originating from Mexico and widely popular as a dip, it constitutes of avocado as its main ingredient. It is eaten with chips, tacos and any other meal ,as a topping.

Prosciutto- PRO-SHOOT-OH

A cured Italian Ham. It is thinly sliced and eaten raw.

Bouillon- BO-YON
Deriving its name from a French verb, Bouillon is a Haitian soup made by cooking vegetables, meat , fish, spinach,salt, seasoning in water. Bouillon cubes, made of all the ingredients (dehydrated meat, vegetables, fish) come handy in preparing the broth.

Bruschetta- BROO-SKEH-TAH

An Italian cuisine consisting of toasted bread pieces with olive oil and salt.The topping may vary according to your choice.
