Michael Jackson was trying to achieve perfection as his main goal. He was a perfectionist in every area of his life and this included his looks. Unfortunately, however, according to his brother Jermaine, he was never able to be happy with the way he looked up until the very end of his life. Why is this? Because perfection does not exist except in our vivid imaginations and in Michael’s case he was never able to see himself physically in a realistic manner.

People have talked about the fact that Michael suffered from a form of mental illness known as Dysmorphic Body Disorder. It is the same thing that causes anorexia. In simplistic terms it means that what a person sees in the mirror is completely different from what everyone else sees. In Michael Jackson’s case specifically, it was focused on his nose. One of the causes of the aforementioned illness is childhood bullying. Both Michael’s father and brothers teased him mercilessly about the size of his nose and he spent the entirety of his adult life trying to “fix” this perceived defect.

It is truly believed that the only other plastic surgery that Michael Jackson had done was a chin implant that included a cleft in it. He stated that he thought it was a more masculine feature and I feel this “goal” came from a very different place than his obsession with his nose. As his first wife Lisa Marie Presley stated in an interview with Diane Sawyer in June of 1995, Michael was an artist and that included using his face as a pallet. This included his wearing of makeup, hairstyles and the continuation of his search for the perfect proboscis.

The sad part of this story is that in his natural state Michael Jackson was a very handsome man but he could not see this fact. He really ended up going through a period that I would call self-abusive around the turn of the century. The way he looked in the short film forYou Rock My Worldpeople feel, absolutely disfigured

As Michael himself stated in his 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey-Hollywood would become a deserted town if everyone who had plastic surgery left at the same time. I think it is so unfair that people call him out for having had “a” nose job. I don’t really understand the fascination people have about this aspect of his life still to this day-9 years after his death. He suffered from several serious illnesses that made him change his appearance but why can’t the world focus on his ever-evolving music instead. I think he would be very saddened to know that this aspect of his life is still so much in the public’s mind.

We sincerely hope that newer generations of Michael Jackson fans who didn’t grow up with the scandals will be more focused on his artistry and less on his appearance.
