Magnificent Mary The Champion

There are achievers and there are fighters, MaryKomis both.
Like many sportspersonsfrom our country, MaryKomtoo was born in a poor family, didn’t have the best of education or resources to start a career. But what she had was the will to fight against all odds and an attitude to never give up.

MaryKomisfromKangathei, a northern state in Manipur. MaryKomis known asa five time World Boxing Champion and the only boxer to win a medal in every one of the six world championships. In the 2012 Olympics,she became the first Indian woman boxer to qualify and win a bronze medal in the 51 kg flyweight category of Boxing. She is currently ranked as Number 4, in the Flyweight category of AIBA World Women’sRanking.

MaryKom’scareer started in 2000 after her victory in the Manipur state women’s boxing championship and the regional championship in West Bengal. In 2001, she started competing at International level. She was only 18 years old when she made herinternational debut at theAIBA Women’s World Boxing championship in United States, winning a silver medal in the 48kg weight category.

Apart from this, MaryKomand her husband have adopted two kids, of a rural village in theChurachandpurDistrict of Manipur who were battling hunger as well as poverty.NengnaeihatandRohitboth are now getting trained at various places for boxing tournaments.Mary is always in touch with these kids no matter in which part of the country she is. Apart fromNengnaeihatandRohitMary herself have three kids. Two of them are twinsKhupneivarKomandRechungvarKomand the third one is PrinceChungthanglenKom.

MaryKomwas awarded withtheArjunaAward for Boxing in the year2003,she was awarded withthePadmaShriin the year 2006. In the year 2009 she was facilitated with Rajiv GandhiKhelRatnaaward, CNN-IBN Indian of the year,Special Achievements the year 2012,PadmaBhushanin the year 2013, Big Star Most Entertaining Sportsman of the year in the year 2014 among many others.

After clinching her sixth world championshiptitle, the 35 year old revealed why she never gave up. Mary said that “Age is just a secondary factor. I don’t know about other women, but once i make a commitment I make sure to complete the task at hand. This is something that has produced results for me”
