The war of succession was fought between the sons of Shah Jahan namely- Aurangzeb,Murad,Shuja and Dara. Dara was the eldest son of Shah Jahan nearly 40 at the time of war. He was kind-hearted but lacked the judgement, liked by all hhindus and Muslims. Aurangzeb was better at war and a staunch sunni. Thus liked by all sunni Muslims. At that time he was governor of Deccan. Shuja and Murad were governors of Bengal and Gujarat respectively. Dara was in Delhi when Aurangzeb and Murad together attacked the throne as they thought that Shah Jahan was dead and they reached there to claim their right on the throne. Because of Aurangzeb's tactics and general ability and Murad's warrior nature they became victorious. And Aurangzeb established himself as the king of the Delhi. Eventually, he got all his brothers murdered. It is said that he beheaded Dara and was so much disgusted with his attitude that after his death he paraded him naked on the elephants back. He imprisoned even Shah Jahan and he remained in captivity till his death in 1667. Murad was a victim of kind of pleasures so he killed him through poison. And pursued shuja to the woods, where he got killed by the tribes. And hence, he became the ultimate ruler without any resistance. And ruled for a long time.
