The Mars mission was the most ambitious mission that was done by the ISRO and the chance of succeeding the mission was less than 10 percent in total. The mission was designed to operate in mars for up to 2 years but the mission is still sending scientific data that can be used by the scientist to study the composition of the martian atmosphere.

The mars orbiter mission was launched in 2013 and it reached the red planet by 2014 . It had traveled 450 million km to the red planet and it reached the red planet about the week after the NASA mission to the moon maven.

This mission was very hard as the people at ISRO didn't have prior experience to do an interplanetary mission to any other planet at all.And this was a mission which was never undertaken by the ISRO scientists.

The MOM orbiter included a high gain antenna to send the messages to the earth and the propellant tank had enough fuel for doing a 2-year mission to Mars as it took 1 year for it to reach mars .

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called theMangalyaan is an Indian space probe orbiting Mars. It is in orbit since 24 September 2014. MOM was launched on November 5th, 2013 by ISRO and is the country’s maiden interplanetary mission. ISRO has become the 4th space agency to reach Mars. Only NASA, the Soviet space program, and the European Space Agency have done it before.

Significance of Mars Exploration

The mars mission is very special as it is one of the mission where there are be sign of life on the planet of mars as it was believed that mars used to have ocean forest on the surface and it had all the condition as that of earth but the mars of today is very cold as compared to earth and all the water is dried out and on the surface there is liquid methan that is present .If we are able to make and do experiment on the surface of mars then we will be one day be able to live on mars.So we are sending our orbiter so that we can do the required research that can be done while we reach the red planet.

This Indian Mission to Mars is primarily intended to establish Indian technological capability to reach the Mars, orbit around it. And it has one of the instruments that most of the scientist were not able to send and that was a methan detector which is placed inside of the given orbiter which will read the given quantity of metane which is present in the given mars atmosphere.

Goals

The mars orbiter mission is the first of a kind whose whole budget is less than the whole budget was mars mission that was send by other space agancies. The objective is to explore Mars' surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere using indigenous scientific instruments. This mission was used to establish that we as indian have the capability to launching interplanitary sateelite to foreign distinct objects. It also aims to use the sciientific experiments that can be tested and used to see what and how is the composition of the soil as well as the martian atmosphere.

The five scientific instruments are

  1. Lyman-Alpha Photometer (LAP)

  2. Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)

  3. Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM)

  4. Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA)

  5. Mars Colour Camera (MCC)

Cost

The cost of this craft was about 73 million and it was much less than making of the movie gravity which costed a lot more than the cost of launching a spacecraft far into space.
