It is a significant pilgrimage site. It is known for its rock carvings and murals, among which the central Shiva head and the large Ganesha figure stand out for their fine work. There is a story behind these rock carvings which is very interesting. People believe that when Lord Shiva as traveling to Kashi (Varanasi) with fellow 1 crore gods and goddess, they took a halt at this place and rest for the evening. The next morning when Lord Shiva woke up, he found no other woke up which made him furious and he transformed all the other deities into stone sculptures and cursing them to stay there for eternity. Well if you go on a trip to Unakoti, do try finding out as many sculptures as possible.
