“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” - Barack Obama.
A BOY from his childhood is encouraged to imbibe qualities such as courage, loyalty and strength while a GIRL is expected to be modest, subdued and often physically less able in terms of stamina and power as in comparison to her male counterparts. This system is referred to as the concept of gender role and identity. So the state of being neither male nor female may be understood in relation to the individual’s biological sex, gender role, gender identity, or sexual orientation. A more involved society where men and women are expected not be judged on the basis their physical attributes but in a real this is not openly accepted everywhere.
In India, there is a unique position on third gender here. The society that has accepted the third gender, or Hijra’s as they are commonly called in mainstream society. People here consider them as sacred. Believers say that Shiva has the ability to transform genders on a whim when he merges with his wife, Parvati to become the androgynous deity. In ancient Hindu texts those who have gender ambiguity are seen as demi-gods and are celebrated. In Manusmriti, a Hindu rule book, a passage reads, “a male child is produced by a greater quantity of male seed, a female child by the prevalence of the female; if both are equal, a third-sex child or boy-and-girl twins are produced.”

Historically and stereotypically, they are considered the adobe of good fortune and fertility onto homes. They are seen around during celebrations like marriages or child birth to offer their blessing. Its believed that if they return annoyed, bad fortune will fall upon the family. Their mystical powers are believed to come from their ability to live between the sexes. Ironically, this is the same reason why these hijra aren’t accepted and considered equally in the society. Never will you find them spending normal leisure time in public places or hanging around with other people. The bias attitude do prevail in the mind that speaks rational than being open to a new level of thinking.
The first step towards third gender equality occurred in India in 2009 when the Election Commission added “other” as a gender option on official ballots. The official ruling by SC in 2014 officially accepted third gender as another category. It is estimated that today over 2 millionIndians identify with a non-binary gender.
Hijras like all other are both shaped by the role they play in society but are also individuals who vary in their emotions, behavior, and outlook on life. Some Hijras are outgoing, flirtatious and jolly and love to dress up. But Hijras play a double-life in this dichotomous gendered society to avoid stigma and discriminations. They wear female clothes and adopt feminine names while visiting general society. However, they wear male clothes and adopt male gestures while living with or visiting relatives. Its said that that maintaining two different lifestyles in and outside the home created an identity crisis and doing this saves them from trouble.
These third gender people are exploited to great level. Due to their peculiar and unique sexual orientation they are often considered as sex object. These heinous assaults by the doers come from the lustful urge who feels no wrong in using hijras for mere sex.
On point, we fail on various level as society. Every issue around us gives a solution of how important it is to spread awareness. But till date core issue still remain same. I would hereby out forth of how individual should start thinking broadly. They should just take in account this as their own duty to change the mindset of people around them. A well read being should impart and show the society a new picture of a society that whole heartedly accepts all, just the way they are, humans.
