“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.”– George Sheehan

Success is indeed a sweet word. Everybody wants it. But it cannot be taken for granted. Every student wants success in examination and he works hard to achieve it. A businessman wants success in his business. A surgeon wants to perform a successful operation and lawyer wants he should be successful in winning a case. But “success in life” is a common term for all.

A student’ssuccess just in the examination is not enough unless he is able to utilize knowledge thus gained in his later life. All parents want their children should be successful in life and they spend a lot of money and do whatever they legitimately can to achieve their aims. Still, all are not successful in life. Some work extremely hard but dame luck does not smile on them. Others don’t exert so much and still, they get success name and fame.

Then is success dependent on dame luck? One can say in certain cases, chance does play its part. Sometimes, a person gets a sudden opportunity for success and he snatches it without delay. And there may be others, even if more intelligent and hard-working, who may never get an opportunity for success and progress in life.

This is, however, not true in all cases. If we study the lives of successful people carefully, we realize that such people have worked very hard at one time or the other in their lives. Even mere hard work is not enough unless the hard work is done in a systematic and well-planned manner. A particular student may burn midnight oil but may not fare quite well in the examination. But there may be another e who may put just a fraction of the labor put in by the former but may come off with flying colors.

So proper planning and thoughtful arrangement of material are essential to be successful in a venture, may be an examination an interview or any other activity. To this must be added proper guidance which can be provided on;y a highly qualified and experienced person. A raw hand in any venture will just come as a cropper.

This, however, can be done only in the proper milieu or environment and requirements. For example, there is scope for science or commerce subjects in the market and a student takes up arts subjects even against his aptitude. However hard he may work and may even plan his material and get proper guidance, his chances of success must be bleak. But, here there is not much need for pessimism if the student has really an aptitude for that particular subject because there is always sufficient room at the top.

Many believe, particularly in the modern corruptworld, that unjust methods such as flattery, bribery, favoritism, egotism etc. are essential for success. Of course, we should not deny that corruption and malpractices do exist on a large scale. But at the same time, we must remember that hard work is the key to success and the merits of a really competent, intelligent and hard working person have to recognized at last.
