In a country like India, unemployment is a sheer wastage of manpower resources. Since
independence, various new job opportunities have been created but these have not kept pace with
the increasing number of employment seekers. The problem of unemployment is becoming all the
more serious each year.
So far the problem remains unsolved. It has led to frustration and crimes which hamper the progress
of the country.

There are various causes of unemployment. The galloping birth rate results in a larger and larger
proportion of job seekers everywhere. To add to it our system of education is not employment
oriented. Science has replaced man by machinery, thus by reducing the number of persons for the
job. Those who have the will and the knowledge to begin a venture on their own, meet the
drawback of lack of funds and finance and have to face the red tapism.

The worst hit is the Btech. graduate. Following the economic liberalisation in 1991 one sector
which witnessed the revolution was the IT industry. It paved a new way for the four years Bachelor
in Technology(B.tech) equally known as engineering course in India and emerged as a viable
alternative to regular courses like Bcom. , BA, BSc. In the year 1990india had approximately 330
Engineering colleges which grew up to 7000 in 2018. This growth of engineering colleges was an
alarming issue. As now the engineers were now produced in the bulk. But what about the quality of
these engineers. Were they engineers or just a degree holder. The current scenario is such that
engineering students burns the midnight oil to secure good grades but fails in landing up in a good
placement and gets baffled. But due to a large number of BTech graduates one has to fight a tough
competition to get a job of his/her choice. Sometimes the BTech graduates are so desperate that
they even apply for D-GRADE jobs like a peon.

In the recent years, the banking sector has emerged as the largest employment producing sector and
it’s a bolt from the blue that engineers who were prepared to deal with various technical aspects are

now successful bankers. According to the data provided by the IBPS(Institute of Banking Personnel
Selection) more than 50% of the new recruits in the past few years are from the engineering
background.
The Indian government was already warned by various commissions about this explosive situation
but the administration turned deaf ear to all these warnings. As in the year 2003, the UR panel
already told the government about the excess supply of engineers in the market. According to the
data provided by aspiring minds(An IT based firm), 95 % of the Indian Engineers are unfit for
software related jobs. This gives us a crystal clear view of the breach in the co-curriculum provided

by the colleges. They just focus on to extract money from student rather than providing a quality
education.

Demonetization added fuel to this fire because as the consequence of demonetization there was the
highest unemployment rate in the last 45 years of Indian history.
In an interview with the news channel. A 2015 Btech passed out student says that “ I was not placed
in any company during the course so I had to start preparing for the competitive exams. But cracking

any competitive exam is not a cakewalk”.

Taking the present situations in consideration of the proper utilization of human resources is the
greatest need. The education system must focus on job-oriented or vocational training. The bitter
truth is that if the problem of unemployment is not dealt with seriously, it will become a threat
someday. A solution to this critical problem must be arrived at before its too late. only then can
every man have a decent living and keep away from indulging in wrong activities.
