Leisure is a lovable word. Everybody wants to have leisure. But leisure has its meaning and
significance only after work. Leisure without work is just the other name of laziness which is a
deplorable thing. However, modern life is full of hustle and bustle and many poets and philosophers
have condemned this excessive stress and strain, hurry and anxiety. W.H. Denies says in his famous
poem “Leisure”:
“What is this life full of care?
We have no time to stand and stare”
The famous poet words worth says in his well-known poem: “The world is too much with us”:
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers,
Little we see in Nature that is ours.”

Leisure is closely related to relaxation and the pursuit of a hobby which depends upon the nature of

a person’s work. A labourer or a man doing strenuous physical work wants not only reset after a few
hours work but also a little diversion like reading a light work, a look at comics or hilarious T.V.

serial. He may also need a cup of tea or a light refreshment to replenish his energy. A person who
has grappled with some tough intellectual work may need a stroll in a park or a garden or a look at
the blooming flowers or sprouting vegetables in his garden. Or he may enjoy a strain of music or
dabble his brush in some colours to paint a fantastic picture. a student may switch on the stereo and

may make some thumping sound with his feet to dance to a tune. A cup of tea or coffee with a few
snacks can refresh the mind.

There are many people who either know nothing about leisure or make a wrong use of it. The
bookworms go on reading continuously for hours and spoil their eyes and health and finally get a
wrecked body and blurred mind and vision. Some students, particularly little children whose parents
do not give full attention to their proper upbringing, continue playing from morning till evening,
giving no attention to their studies. Doing no work is not leisure. Leisure comes only after work. It is

a short period for rest and recovery after strenuous work-physical or mental-like recess period at
school or an interval in a cinema show. Even machinery needs some rest and oiling after working for
some time.

Still worse are the persons who indulge in such pastimes as gambling, rambling etc. They are far
away from the limits of work and live in the domain of vices just as we enjoy rich food only after
brisk walking or good exercise, we can enjoy the real happiness derived from leisure only if we take

it at rest, relaxation and means of diversion after hard work.
