By now you all might know how much I love talking about cinema. Over the years cinema has become a very major part of my life and why should it not, its the most interactive and influential means of entertainment. Not only me but cinema has also been a major part of the Indian history. From Kishore Kumar's charming and melodious songs to the angry young man's manly voice, from k..k..k..kiran to the Bhaiiii!!! Era; Indian cinema has gone through some drastic changes over the years and so has the tastes of audiences.
There was a time when people used to go gaga when shirtless Sallu Bhai used to come on screen and just shake his belt buckle. There was also a time when Rajnikanth bounced a chewing gum into his mouth and the theatre echoed with whistles, now is not that time. In the past few years Indian audience has shown the film industry that underwhelming content will not be accepted. Even the 3 Khans of Bollywood couldn't escape this drive, they faced severe backlash and monetary looses for their bad content.
This new content drive can be seen in many different ways. On the more positive side the film industry is now more competent than ever and aims of providing the audience with a good cinematic experience. With the growing reach of social media, audiences can now interact with the performers and viewers and tell them about a film's flaws and plus points directly. This makes the audience more aware of what they should watch and what must be skipped. However the growing reach of social media also provides the audience with a free reign over a film. Now think of this, a meme page owner who has not even seen the film posts a bad thing about it which is viewed by thousands of people, irrespective of the quality of the film this is too much power in one's hands. Secondly films are a doorway to escape reality, they are not supposed to be judged on how realistic they are but the amount of entertainment they provide. Sometimes audience start nitpicking in films that are not supposed to be logical but highly entertaining thus affecting its business through word of mouth. I mean if you want so much of realistic approach then just go and sit on a bus stand for the whole day and observe life.
The film industry has taken a big hit in numbers due to the content drive. The total box office collections have continuously deteriorated over the years. Because of this drive online streaming websites like Netflix have benefited heavily and at the end they are going to be the future of entertainment.
